In the Netherlands, a 72-year-old elderly man has become the longest infected Covid-19 patient in the world, with 613 days being affected by the Omicron variant. Researchers in the Netherlands stated that during his infection period, the Corona virus underwent more than 50 mutations. However, in the end, the man passed away after a long battle against Covid-19.

This case marks one of the longest recorded journeys of COVID-19 infection. Over the course of 20 months battling the infection, the medical team tried various ways to assist the man, but without success. His body failed to provide an adequate immune response, even with the use of antibody medications. The man ultimately died due to a relapse of his underlying medical condition.

Patients infected with SARS-CoV-2, especially the Omicron variant of Corona, generally recover within a few days or weeks. However, in very rare cases, the infection can persist for up to two years. According to a report from researchers at the Center for Experimental and Molecular Medicine (CEMM) at Amsterdam University Medical Center (Amsterdam UMC) in the Netherlands, the virus has become resistant to sotrovimab, a Covid-19 antibody treatment, within 21 days after patients start receiving it.

The analysis results show that the original Omicron BA1 variant has undergone more than 50 mutations, some of which make it capable of evading the human immune system.
