Dream - A geologist from the Netherlands made a surprising discovery while studying the geographical conditions in the Southeast Asian region, including Indonesia. The results of his findings indicate that beneath most of the southern Indonesian islands and Myanmar, there is a fragment of a mini continent called Argoland.
"Previously, about 155 million years ago, a piece of continent measuring 5,000 kilometers detached from the western part of Australia. Geological experts confirmed this after discovering a hidden basin deep beneath the ocean known as the Argo Abyssal Plain. The piece of continent, later named Argoland, drifted away from Australia after being dragged by deep ocean currents."
However, geologists do not know where and what happened to the continent piece. Geologists can only speculate that this mini continent must have drifted to the northwest. They believe that the position of this mini continent ended up where the islands around Southeast Asia are currently located.
This estimate is based on the theory that continents are always moving and undergoing changes. Due to tectonic plates, these continents can merge with each other over millions of years to form a 'supercontinent'. Over millions of years, these continents can also break apart into smaller continents again.
However, recently scientists at Utrecht University, Netherlands, have successfully discovered traces of Argoland. Geology experts at Utrecht University have successfully reconstructed the history of the lost continent.
Apparently, Argoland still exists, but in the form of small pieces.
By using reconstruction models and field research data from several islands, including Sumatra, Kalimantan, and the Andaman Islands, these experts found that Argoland has never been a coherent continent.
Argoland began to break up into several parts around 300 million years ago, forming what researchers call the 'Argopelago'. The situation in Southeast Asia is very different from Africa and South America, where a continent is neatly divided into two parts.
"revealed Eldert Advokaat, one of the authors of the study published in the journal Gondwana Research."
The fragments are now hidden beneath most of the territory of Indonesia and Myanmar, and arrived there at almost the same time. Researchers have also found that the fragmentation of Argoland was accelerated about 215 million years ago. This explains why the 'continent' became so fragmented and made the process of uniting the fragments of Argoland more difficult. "We are truly dealing with mysterious islands, that is why our research took a very long time. We spent seven years putting together this puzzle," said Advokaat.
According to the author of another study, Douwe van Hinsbergen, it is important to know how these lost continents could go unnoticed. Douwe adds that this reconstruction is crucial for our understanding of processes such as the evolution of biodiversity and climate. "This information is also important for discovering mining materials. And most importantly, for understanding how mountains are formed or for knowing the driving forces behind tectonic plates; two phenomena that are closely related," concludes Douwe.
