Dream - Erma Yulihastin, a researcher at the Climate and Atmospheric Research Center of BRIN, stated that the tornado that struck the Rancaekek area, Bandung Regency, West Java, on Wednesday afternoon, February 21, 2024, has similarities with the one that occurred in the United States (US) 20 years ago. Erma said that the tornado structure in Rancaekek has a 99.99 percent similarity to the tornado that occurred in the US.

"The structure of tornadoes in Rancaekek, Indonesia, compared to tornadoes that commonly occur in the northern hemisphere, the United States. It has a similarity of 99.99%, or very similar," wrote X @EYulihastin's account, on Thursday, February 22, 2024. Erma also included a photo of a tornado in Rancaekek with a tornado storm in Ahrens, US in 2004."

"The chronology of photos and videos from the community and media greatly helps researchers in documenting this recorded first tornado," she wrote. Erna explained that tornadoes have a higher wind strength scale and a wider radius. The minimum wind speed of a tornado reaches 70 kilometers per hour."

Based on BRIN's study, the strongest tornado ever recorded had a speed of 56 kilometers per hour. According to Erma, the cases of tornadoes that commonly occur in Indonesia only last for about 5 to 10 minutes, which is already considered very long.

"There was only one unusual case when a tornado occurred for 20 minutes in Cimenyan in 2021," he explained. Erma revealed that BRIN, through the Initial Study of Mid-Term Season in the Indonesian Region (KAMAJAYA), has predicted extreme weather events that will occur in Indonesia on February 21, 2024."
