Dream - In the era of digitalization, someone can earn money by utilizing communication technology. That is what a man from China did. Unfortunately, his actions of manipulating technology resulted in him spending time behind bars. The man from China caused a sensation in the public after being arrested by the police for committing cyber fraud. The criminal acts he committed were not trivial and could be considered very extreme.
Quoting the South China Morning Post, a man named Wang manipulated the number of live broadcast viewers using 4,600 cellphones. Not kidding, the generated money reached US$415 thousand or around Rp6.6 billion in less than 4 months.
This business started at the end of 2022, when Wang was told by his friend about a practice that is considered profitable known as 'brushing'. The term 'brushing' is defined as a real-time activity that is faked, such as the number of viewers, likes, comments, and shares in a live broadcast to simulate genuine user interactions and mislead the audience. Wang started his business by purchasing 4,600 phones that can be controlled by cloud-based software specifically.
Besides a cellphone, Wang also bought several other special devices such as VPN services and network-based equipment, such as routers and switches sold by a technology company in Changsha, Hunan Province, Central China.
With a few clicks on his computer, Wang can operate thousands of mobile phones that he has purchased simultaneously to flood a live broadcast. Then he can increase the number of viewers and interactions within it, such as like and share features. He acknowledges that the cost of operating one mobile phone every day amounts to 6.65 yuan or Rp14.7 thousand. "The cost of using one phone is 6.65 yuan per day," he said.
The service rate provided by Wang depends on the duration of each mobile phone connected to the live broadcast. Not only that, the final service cost is also influenced by the number of mobile phones activated to manipulate the number of viewers.
He admitted that the fake viewer accounts on the mobile phone were purchased in large quantities from others. It is not uncommon for those accounts to be blocked because they failed to verify the real names of the original users. However, the re-registration process is relatively easy to do again. Until last March, Wang had earned around three million yuan or around Rp6.6 billion from clients who used his services.
As a result of his actions, Wang was arrested by the police and sentenced to one year and three months in prison, as well as being fined 50,000 yuan or Rp110.9 million.
A total of 17 other suspects are also being investigated for "violating national regulations by spreading false information online through publishing services to gain profit and disrupt the market order," according to local authorities. This fraud has become a problem on live broadcasting platforms and e-commerce websites in China. As a result, local residents are urging the responsible parties to regulate it. One observer believes that this case is not an isolated incident. "This is clearly not an isolated case," he thinks. Report: Nisya Aprilya
