Previously, SRS TNWK has successfully given birth to five Sumatran rhinos, and this event marks the second rhino birth in 2023.

Satyawan Pudyatmoko, Director General of Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems (KSDAE) KLHK, explained that Harapan, a male rhinoceros, was born in 2007 from the mating of Emi and Ipuh at the Cincinnati Zoo, United States. Harapan began occupying SRS TNWK in 2015 and became the last Sumatran rhinoceros to be repatriated to Indonesia. This indicates that currently there are no more Sumatran rhinoceroses outside of Indonesia.

Officials found a healthy baby rhinoceros in a standing and walking condition.

Satyawan said, when found by the officers, the baby rhino from Delilah was able to stand upright and walk. Its condition is also observed to be good and safe. "Shortly after being found, it was able to suckle while standing. Currently, the mother and baby rhino are already in the SRS TNWK treatment enclosure (boma), with the baby rhino weighing 25 kg," said Setyawan.

Setyawan revealed that SRS TNWK, managed by the Way Kambas National Park Office in collaboration with the Indonesian Rhino Foundation, is located in the special area of TNWK.
"The main goal is to produce Sumatran rhinoceros offspring to maintain the survival of the endangered Sumatran rhinoceros species. The Sumatran rhinoceros offspring from the breeding program at SRS TNWK can be reintroduced back into their natural habitat in the future,"

According to Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation Number 106 of 2018, the Sumatran rhinoceros or Dicerorhinus sumatrensis is included in the category of protected animals in Indonesia.

The current conservation status in the IUCN Red List is critically endangered\/CR.
