Conditions of Fasting for Travelers, Which is Preferable: Continuing to Fast or Breaking it?

The rules of fasting during Ramadan for travelers in canceling or continuing their fasting are adjusted according to their conditions.

Dream - Every Muslim certainly knows clearly that fasting in Ramadan is obligatory. However, Islam can also provide leniency to those who have legitimate excuses. In Indonesia itself, towards the end of Ramadan fasting, there is usually a tradition of mudik or going back to the hometown. There are many people who choose to leave well in advance before Eid to return to their hometowns to avoid traffic jams.

Well, during the journey, of course, it is still in the atmosphere of Ramadan fasting. So, what are the provisions for fasting for a traveler?

Fasting Rules for Travelers, Which is More Preferable Between Continuing Fasting or Breaking It?

This is important for Dream friends to know. Especially for those of you who are preparing to go on a journey during Eid al-Fitr. Here is an explanation about the fasting rules for travelers as summarized by Dream through various sources.

"Ease of Fasting for Travelers"

Sayyidah Aisyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that Hamzah bin Amr al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) once asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about fasting while traveling.

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) gave his answer as stated in the following hadith: "From Aisha (ra), she said that Hamzah bin Amr al-Aslami once asked the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) about fasting while traveling. Then he answered, 'If you wish, then fast, and if you wish, then break it.' (Narrated by Muslim) The determination of fasting during Ramadan for travelers to break or continue their fast is adjusted according to their conditions. Because there are those whose conditions require them to break their fast and there are also conditions that do not allow you to break your fast."

Although later you cancel fasting, but outside of Ramadan you still have an obligation to make up for the missed fasts according to the number of days you have left fasting.

"Conditions of Fasting for Travelers"

"In this month of Ramadan, there are several fasting regulations for travelers that are important for Muslims to know. What are those regulations?"

1. Haram

The first rule of fasting is forbidden if you, friend Dream, suspect that there will be problems within yourself. Whether it is a body part or bodily function due to fasting. It may not be dangerous at the present time, but it can be dangerous in the future. Therefore, in this condition, you are obliged not to fast.

2. Disliked

The following is the translation of the given 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "The conditions for makruh (discouraged) are when the requirements for not fasting for travelers are met. The requirements are as follows: The journey taken is a journey that allows for qasar (shortened) prayer. The journey is permissible, not a journey for wrongdoing. The journey is conducted during the night before the dawn of Subuh (pre-dawn prayer) and passes the village boundary before Subuh arrives."

3. Mandatory

The following is the translation of the given 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any HTML tags: "The obligatory fasting rule for travelers who do not meet the requirements for being allowed not to fast. The requirements are the same as those previously explained."

"Differences of Opinions Among Scholars on Which is More Preferable Between Fasting or Breaking Fast"

Regarding which is more important for a traveler, whether to continue fasting or to break it, there are differing opinions among scholars. The following is an explanation quoted from Instagram @nuonline_id:

"First Opinion"

The first opinion states that the most important thing for travelers is to continue fasting. Those who hold this opinion are Abu Hanifah and his followers, Imam Malik, and Imam Syafi'i.

Second Opinion

The second opinion states that the most important thing for travelers is not to fast. Those who hold this opinion are Imam al-Auza'i, Imam Ahmad, and Imam Ishaq.

Through both opinions above, it tends to lean towards the first opinion which states that travelers are better off continuing to fast. However, with the condition that fasting does not harm oneself. But when fasting actually endangers oneself, then the most important thing is not to fast.
