Dream - Ramadan, which should be a peaceful time, has never been experienced by the people of Gaza, Palestine. In order to get food, the residents of Northern Gaza, whose area has been destroyed, have to buy canned food, a little flour, and grains in the emergency market.
A mother named Nermeen Tafesh along with her five children have to explore stalls every day to get affordable food. However, the current situation has made the available food items very expensive. Without any jobs, most residents do not have income that can be used for shopping.
Tafesh was surprised to learn that the price of 1 kilogram of potatoes reached 40 shekels or Rp173 thousand. Meanwhile, rice with the same weight is sold for 80 shekels or Rp346 thousand. Whereas before the war, the price of rice was only around Rp31 thousand.
The condition is often making him have to return from the market empty-handed. "I am now the sole breadwinner for my family and we have not received any humanitarian assistance since the war started," said Tafesh, as quoted from NPR.
The eldest son, Tafesh, Yousef (14), helps his mother find wood to make a fire. Yousef does this because Israel has cut off fuel and electricity supplies. "We used to have flour until it ran out. Then we got wheat and that ran out too. Then corn kernels. After that, we tried animal feed. Now, my mother makes us pudding with just water and tapioca flour, and we eat it," Yousef tells the story.
Tafesh said that they do not have milk, protein, fruits, and vegetables. The child continues to cry out of hunger and wants bread. These conditions make the children weak, their bones start to protrude, and they become helpless.
The youngest son, Tafesh, who is only four years old before the war, is very active and cheerful. However, now he spends a lot of his time sleeping.
"Every night I go to sleep in fear, only to wake up and find one of my children dead," Tafesh recounts. A similar situation is also experienced by Riwa Massoud Saed, a Gaza woman who lives with her daughter. Saed has to search for any kind of food, whether it be leafy plants or weeds that can be found."
