Dream - After years of failure, scientists finally succeeded in capturing images of a very rare giant rat. The size of the giant rat is reported to be so big that it can chew on a whole coconut.
The first time the picture of the giant rat was taken by a researcher in the Solomon Islands. This rodent is known to be elusive and can grow up to half a meter, hence called the giant rat. Using trap cameras and various delicious baits, the team successfully captured images of the 4 rodent animals.
In the recording, the size of the mouse is at least twice as large as a regular mouse. These mice are running on the forest floor of the Solomon Islands located in northeastern Australia.
According to the Ecology and Evolution Journal released on November 20th, the mice are called Vangunu giant rats. They are named after an island and have a large body size with a long tail and very short ears.
The native inhabitants of Vangunu, an island in the middle of the Solomon Islands, have long known that the giant rat is capable of chewing on the coconuts that grow in their forests. "Taking pictures of the giant Vangunu rats for the first time is such a positive news for this rarely known species," said research leader Tyrone Lavery.
"Previously, evidence of the existence of the Vangunu rat (Uromys Vika) was seen in 2017. At that time, there was commercial logging and a giant rat was found coming out of a tree and then died."
A few years later, the local Zaira community helped researchers install trap cameras to capture the secretive rodents. "All the images were taken during their active time at night, when they gathered in the middle of the night," wrote the researchers.
To lure the giant Vangunu rat, researchers approached the trap camera and installed bait in the form of sesame oil after previous attempts failed using peanut butter.
"Unfortunately, the Vangunu giant rat could become extinct due to commercial logging that has destroyed most of the forests on the island. Last year, the Solomon Islands government allowed commercial logging in the last remaining forests where the survival of the Vangunu giant rat is already threatened. 'Logging permits have been granted in Zaira. If this is processed, there is no doubt that it will lead to the extinction of the Vangunu giant rat,' said Lavery. Representatives from the Zaira community have appealed against the government's decision and hope that the image of U. Vika can support their efforts."
