Dream - Hot temperatures hit several areas in Pakistan and India. In Sindh Province, Pakistan, according to local officials last Monday, the temperature even reached 52 degrees Celsius.
Extreme temperatures have indeed hit several countries in Asia in the past few months. Scientists say that these extreme temperatures are a result of global climate change. In Mohenjo Daro, a city that was once an ancient civilization in the year 2500 BC in the Sindh Province, the temperature has been continuously rising in just the past 24 hours, reaching 52 degrees Celsius. This data was reported by a senior official in the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Dhahid Abbas.
The temperature is approaching the record highest temperature in Pakistan, which reached 53.5 and 54 degrees Celsius. Mohenjio Daro is a small city that experiences scorching summers and cool winters.
The extreme temperature makes many people reluctant to leave the house. They have almost stopped coming to stores to shop.
"Customers did not come to the restaurant because the weather was very hot. I sat silently in the restaurant with these tables and chairs and without customers," said Wajid Ali, a 32-year-old man and owner of a tea shop, as quoted from menafn.com, Tuesday, May 28, 2024. "I take several showers a day which makes me feel a bit refreshed. There is also no electricity. The heat makes us very uncomfortable," he added."
The local doctor, Mushtaq Ahmed, added that the residents have adapted to living in extreme weather conditions and prefer to stay indoors or near water. "Pakistan is the fifth most vulnerable country to the impacts of climate change. We have witnessed heavy rains and floods," said the climate advisor to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Rubina Khursheed Alam.
The highest temperature recorded in Pakistan occurred in Tubart City, Balochistan Province, in 2017, reaching 54 degrees Celsius. Tahir Farooq, a doctor who works at a hospital in Dadu, a city that experienced a temperature of 50 degrees Celsius last week, admitted to treating thousands of patients.
"And more patients are coming in," said Tahir Farooq, quoted from The Statesman. The suffering is also felt by people who work on the streets of Dadu City. For example, rickshaw pullers like a resident named Zeeshan Khan Shani. "It's like living in hell. You feel like walking on burning coals when you step out under the sun," said Zeeshan Khan Shani.
The Pakistan government last week ordered the temporary closure of schools, postponed exams, and declared a state of emergency in hospitals as the first heatwave of the summer began. Authorities said temperatures reached eight degrees Celsius higher than normal for this time of year and cited climate change as the reason. Hundreds of people die in Pakistan each year due to climate change-related disasters, while thousands lose their homes and livelihoods in a country that contributes only a small amount to global carbon emissions.
