Every visitor to the Hattusa Ruins passes through the famous Yerkapı Tunnel, where 249 symbols dating back 3500 years were found.
The successfully deciphered Anatolian hieroglyphs last year (a writing system with about 500 signs), in which it contains information about the builders of the tunnel. The hieroglyphs contain the names and positions of the individuals responsible for the construction of the tunnel.
Associate Professor Dr. Bülent Genç recently discovered an inscription containing 249 symbols. This inscription is illustrated with colors that come from roots. In the hieroglyphs found at the western and eastern ends of the tunnel, it is revealed that the construction of the tunnel was carried out under the responsibility of someone named 'Arişadu'. This finding is considered the most important discovery related to the process of building the tunnel.
The hieroglyphs seen on the western side of the tunnel also include the symbols "Mount Tuthaliya" and "road". The combination of these symbols indicates that the tunnel was designed as a pathway leading to Mount Tuthaliya.
Mount Tuthaliya is considered a sacred mountain by the Het people, even some kings chose to take their kingdom's name from that place. The symbol "path" is believed to carry meanings such as 'path from Tuthaliya', 'path to Mount Tuthaliya', or 'path that crosses Mount Tuthaliya'.
With the symbols inside the tunnel, the hypothesis arises "whether Yerkapı can be associated with Mount Tuthaliya or whether Mount Tuthaliya itself was built artificially?" Yerkapı can be seen from all directions, especially from the plain because it is located at the highest peak around Hattusa. Its strategic presence and corresponding characteristics make this sacred place intriguing.
Prof Dr Andreas Schachner stated in his statement that Anatolian hieroglyphs used in tunnel construction provide important clues to understanding the Hittite era. These hieroglyphs appear as signatures, inscriptions, or expressions. Anatolian hieroglyphs are said to anticipate various applications such as everyday communication, city navigation signs, and others.
