Some scientists believe that extinct dinosaurs over 65 million years ago may still exist on other planets.
According to research published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, dinosaurs may not only exist on other planets, but we also have the potential to discover them. To determine whether dinosaurs may exist, researchers can investigate the substances present during the dinosaur era. However, these substances are not found on Earth in the present time.
Scientists believe that oxygen could be a key element in the effort to discover dinosaurs. The existence, development, and dominance of dinosaurs for millions of years required higher levels of oxygen.
"In the present era, the oxygen content in Earth's atmosphere is approximately 21%, but during the era of dinosaurs, the oxygen level was higher, reaching 31%."
In his study, it is mentioned that if oxygen levels comparable to the dinosaur era were found on another planet, it could be an indication of the existence of dinosaurs. Lisa Kaltenegger, the lead researcher, conveyed that, "The modern Earth's light signature has become something we commonly use to identify potentially habitable planets, but there was a time when this signature was even more pronounced, better at showing signs of life."
The researchers are searching for key clues in their efforts to find signs of the Phanerozoic era on other planets, which could create conditions that support the evolution of creatures like dinosaurs. Rebecca Payne from Cornell University explains that the Phanerozoic era, which encompasses the last 12% of Earth's history, is the focus of the search because it includes a time of more complex life. If similar conditions are found on other planets, it could open up the possibility of new dinosaurs.
Lisa Kaltenegger hopes that through this research, planets with higher levels of oxygen can be found, which can facilitate the search for life, including the possibility of other undiscovered dinosaurs.
