Dream - A man from India named Ravindran Nair was trapped in an elevator for two days without water and food. Nair entered the elevator to see a doctor on Saturday, July 13, 2024. However, he ended up being trapped alone in the hospital elevator for 42 hours.
Family members of Nair initially thought he was working, but later contacted the police as he did not show up. This incident suddenly became the talk of many people in India, leading to the state government firing three technicians and conducting an investigation. Officials from the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, and the health minister of the Indian state of Kerala have apologized to Nair.
Nair tried to contact the emergency number listed in the elevator but there was no answer. He also tried calling his wife Sreelekha CP, who works at the hospital.
"I called anyone who came to mind, but the call didn't connect. I started to panic and banged on the elevator door to get attention. That's when my phone fell to the floor and wouldn't turn on," he said, as quoted by Independent. "I screamed and shouted for help and tried to open the door with my hands. Now I'm stuck in the dark elevator, but luckily, there's enough air to breathe," he added.
"He then wandered around the elevator, pressing the alarm bell repeatedly, but the result remained futile. 'Hours passed, I didn't know if it was day or night because it was pitch black. When I got tired, I slept in the corner. I had to use another corner to urinate and defecate,' he said."
"Usually when visiting the hospital, Nair and his wife use the elevator designated for employees. But this time he stepped into the elevator designated for patients and visitors, to go to the second floor. 'It was around noon. There was no one else in the elevator but the lights were on, so I didn't think there was anything wrong,' he said."
"He pressed the button and the elevator started to go up but when it approached the second floor, the elevator suddenly went down with a loud crash and got stuck between the first and second floors."
At that time, he did not know that his heavy trial would last for almost two days. At one point, he remembered that he had to take a pill to keep his blood pressure under control. "I held it, but couldn't swallow it because I didn't have water and my mouth was dry from screaming for help. I started wondering if I would die inside the elevator," he recalled.
Help finally arrived on Monday morning around 06.00 local time when an operator opened the door and asked him to jump out. After Nair was rescued, the first thing he did was call his wife, who had no idea that her missing husband was trapped at work. The hospital has since put up a warning outside the elevator asking people not to use it while it is being repaired.
