Dream - Norway, Spain, and Ireland have become the latest countries to recognize Palestine as a state. A total of 145 out of 193 member countries of the United Nations now recognize Palestine as a state. As reported by France24, these countries include many countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, including Indonesia. However, they do not include the United States, Canada, most Western European countries, Australia, Japan, and South Korea.
In April last year, the United States was known to have used its veto power in the UN Security Council to prevent Palestine's efforts to become a full member of the UN. Here are Palestine's efforts to attain statehood:1988: Arafat declares a stateOn November 15, 1988, during the first Palestinian intifada or uprising, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat unilaterally declared an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
The announcement was delivered in Algeria, at the meeting of the National Palestinian Council in exile, which adopted the two-state solution as a goal with independent states of Israel and Palestine standing side by side.
A few minutes later, Algeria became the first country to officially recognize an independent Palestinian state. In the following weeks, dozens of other countries, including most Arab countries, India, Turkey, most of Africa, and some countries in central and eastern Europe, have followed the same steps.
The next wave of recognition came at the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011, during the crisis in the Middle East peace process. South American countries including Argentina, Brazil, and Chile responded to Palestine's call to support their statehood claim. This happened in response to Israel's decision to end the temporary ban on Jewish settlement construction in the occupied West Bank.
In 2011, when peace negotiations stopped, Palestine continued its campaign for full membership in the United Nations (UN).
In a breakthrough step on October 31, 2011, the UN cultural body UNESCO decided to accept Palestine as a full member. In response, Israel and the United States suspended their funding for the organization. They withdrew from UNESCO in 2018, although the United States rejoined last year.
In November 2012, the Palestinian flag was raised for the first time at the UN office in New York after the General Assembly decided to upgrade Palestine's status to "non-member observer state". Three years later, the International Criminal Court also accepted Palestine as a party state.
In 2014, Sweden, which has a large Palestinian community, became the first Western European country to recognize Palestine.
This action was taken following clashes that have been happening almost every day for months in East Jerusalem conducted by Israel. The State of Palestine has previously been recognized by six other European countries, namely Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Romania. Israel's relentless attacks in Gaza since October 2023 have increased support in Europe for the State of Palestine.
After receiving warnings for months, Norway, Spain, and Ireland finally took the step on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described it as a historical justice issue. Malta and Slovenia have also expressed readiness to recognize the state of Palestine when the conditions are right.
Australia has also thrown the possibility of supporting Palestine, and French President Emmanuel Macron has done the same.
