Dream - An English teacher and Scout leader at SMPN 1 Sukodadi, Lamongan, East Java, shaved the heads of 14 female students simply because they did not wear a ciput to cover their hair when wearing hijab.
The Headmaster of SMP N 1 Sukodadi, Harto, explained that the incident occurred when a teacher with the initials EN was teaching a 9th grade class on Wednesday, August 23rd. At that time, the teacher noticed that some female students were not wearing their headscarves properly, which exposed some of their hair. Upset with the students' appearance, the teacher then punished them by cutting their hair with an electric hair clipper.
The hair of some female students had to be partially shaved because it was cut randomly. "Not completely bald. It's not nice to be called bald, so just cut it partially. Because using an electric machine cutter, it might go a little too far," said Harto, quoted from Liputan6.com, Wednesday, August 30, 2023.
Because of that incident, some parents protested to the school. Hasto then made efforts to mediate by visiting the houses and gathering the parents at the school. Mediation was held the next day and attended by Harto, a teacher with the initials EN, and 10 parents whose children were victims.
In that forum, Harto said that the parents and teachers involved in the bullying agreed to forgive each other. EN admitted that his actions were wrong. Harto also admitted that he had reported the case to the Lamongan Education Office.
Currently, EN is being pulled by the Lamongan Education Office, and is not allowed to teach at SMPN 1 Sukodadi until an unspecified time.
Word Harto.
The action of shaving the hair of dozens of female students received criticism from various parties. One of them was Illiza Sa'aduddin Djamal, a member of Commission X of the DPR. She regrets the actions of the English teacher.
He explained that wearing a hijab is an obligation, while wearing a ciput is part of the complement and perfection of the hijab so that the front hair is not visible. Illiza hopes that teachers throughout Indonesia will prioritize persuasive aspects in education, with gentleness and patience. "Whatever the reason, such actions are certainly not justified in education. They should be given a warning first, then educated on how to wear the hijab correctly and of course not solely based on emotions," she said.
His hard work has paid off. Now he can enjoy the fruits of his patience.
