Why Does Air Pollution in Jakarta Worsen from Night to Morning? This is What BMKG Says

Dream - Air pollution is surrounding Jakarta and its surroundings, causing the city to appear heavily foggy. In fact, pollution is worsening and becoming more dangerous at night until morning, when human activities are minimal.

"Why is that possible?"

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that the concentration of particulate matter or PM 2.5 in Jakarta even increases until early morning. "If we look at the daily cycle, the concentration of PM 2.5 tends to be higher at night until early morning. Then in the morning, as the activities of the community increase, the concentration of PM 2.5 also increases," said the Head of the Climate Change Information Center of BMKG, A Fachri Radjab, quoted from merdeka.com, Tuesday, August 29, 2023.

"Influenced by the Inversion Layer"

Fachri explained that the poor air quality in Jakarta during the night is influenced by the decreasing inversion layer during the night. "Pollutants or particles that cause pollution tend to be higher at night because of what we call the inversion layer, which is a reverse layer," said Fachri.

Fachri conveys that the inversion layer becomes a gathering place for pollutants. During the night when the thickness of the inversion layer decreases, the concentration of pollutants will actually increase.

"If we know the temperature, the higher the place, the colder it gets, but at a certain altitude, the temperature will remain stable and not decrease, that's what is called the inversion layer. Now, it is in this layer that pollutants accumulate. During the night, the thickness of the inversion layer decreases, resulting in a higher concentration."

"Early Warning Air Pollution Notification"

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Respiratory Disease and Air Pollution Control Committee, Agus Dwi Susanto, said that the Ministry of Health is now preparing an early warning system (EWS) or early warning system related to air pollution. Early warning notifications of pollution will appear on the mobile phones of the public who have downloaded the Satusehat application, previously known as PeduliLindungi.

"He explained that the warning will be accompanied by recommendations on what the public should do if air pollution worsens. 'We will prepare an early warning system (EWS) that will be integrated with data from SatuSehat,' said Agus."

It is known that the issue of air pollution in Jakarta and its surrounding areas is still widely discussed. This issue has been responded to by several government officials by emphasizing changes in community behavior. One of them is by implementing the work from home (WFH) policy for 50 percent of civil servants (ASN) in DKI Jakarta. This policy is believed to be able to reduce the amount of pollution in the capital city. However, the air quality monitoring application, Nafas Indonesia, assesses that the WFH policy has no effect on air quality or pollution in Jakarta. Based on data from August 17th, the air pollution levels in Jakarta and its surrounding areas have actually decreased, resulting in very good air quality being detected.

"Air pollution decreased on the 17th, how is that possible? Let's see using data. On the 17th in the afternoon around 16.00, Jakarta and Bodetabek in our air monitor showed yellow air and even some green."

Piotr detected that a few hours earlier on August 17th or during the daytime, the air pollution was high. The air quality in the Nafas Indonesia application is still red, especially in the Serpong area.

According to Poitr, the main cause of the decrease in pollution on Independence Day is due to the wind direction. He showed a graph of air pollution data from August 16 to 19, 2023, which dropped drastically on August 17 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM local time. Meanwhile, at the same time, the wind speed increased by almost 300 percent. However, this only lasted for a few hours because after the wind subsided, the pollution started to rise again. "So unfortunately, it's not the holiday or WFH that affects air pollution, but the wind," said Piotr.

"For the Serpong area, which is often detected to have poor air quality, Piotr suspects several causes. Namely, industries, waste burning, construction, and cross-border activities from outside the region. "Our suggestion is to conduct further investigation there," he said."
