Dream - Israeli archaeologists have discovered a site believed to be the location of one of the oldest mosques in the world. The mosque, located in the Rahat City area of Negev Bedouin, Israel, is estimated to have been built in the 7th century when Islam first began to spread in the Holy Land. "What is unique about this mosque is the discovery of many 7th-century ceramics at the site, making it one of the earliest mosques in the world."
According to archaeologist Dr. Elena Kogan-Zehavi, one of the Directors of Excavation of the Israel Antiquities Authority.
According to him, this mosque is a silent witness to the spread of Islam at the end of the Byzantine era or the beginning of Islam in the Holy Land.
Kogan-Zehavi mentioned that this mosque houses many ceramics that typographically date back to the 7th and 8th centuries.
Both halls of the building are identified as mosques due to their structural elements, namely the square space and the walls facing the direction of the Qibla in Mecca, which is the holy city of Islam.
Besides that, a semi-circular niche or mihrab is found along the middle part of the wall facing south.

Besides the mosque, the archaeologists also discovered a Byzantine-era farmhouse which they believe to be a place for Christian farmers, including a fortified tower and rooms with strong walls surrounding the courtyard. Its construction raises many questions, including whether the same Christian community became Muslim? Or was the settlement repopulated by semi-nomadic traders who may have brought the new religion from the Arabian Peninsula?
"Maybe a combination of both. All the questions seem to be open there on the site. Now our task is to try to gather information to understand what is happening," said Koga-Zehavi.
Other puzzles, the mosque is built quite far from some settlements. So researchers question the role of prayer space in everyday life. "We don't know the relationship between the congregation and the mosque. Maybe it is only used on Fridays?" said Kogan-Zehavi in surprise. (x)
