Dream - Every country must have borders with the countries around it. The form of these borders varies depending on the location and natural conditions of each country. One unique example is the border between Spain and Morocco. Named Penon de Velez de la Gomera, this border, which is only 85 meters long, is the smallest in the world.
Spain has a land border that is almost 2000 kilometers long with Portugal and France. This Matador country also has smaller borders with countries like Andorra, England (Gibraltar), and Morocco.
"Although small in size, this island has become a witness to historical journeys and modern challenges for the governments of Spain and Morocco."
With Morocco, Spain shares the shortest land border in the world. A strip of land measuring 85 meters connects an island of approximately 19,000 square meters to the coast of Morocco. Quoting Oddity Central, Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera has been part of Spanish territory since 1564 when it was taken over by Admiral Pedro de Estopiñán. Although Morocco has claimed the territory several times, Spain remains firm in enforcing its authority there by placing troops to maintain security.
Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera is one of several "places of sovereignty" owned by Spain in North Africa, along with Ceuta, Melilla, Peñón de Alhucemas, Chafarinas Islands, and Isla de Perejil. Its legal status is a non-autonomous territory under the authority of Spain.
Interestingly, this barren rock used to be an island until the earthquake in 1934 created a small strip of land that transformed it into a peninsula. This land border is officially recognized as the smallest border in the world.
Currently, Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera is only inhabited by Spanish forces assigned for surveillance and defense. The soldiers on guard duty will rotate every month. They reside in simple facilities that do not have running water or electricity supply. On a daily basis, the soldiers solely rely on Spanish Navy ships to regularly deliver supplies.
Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera is the last Spanish territory to have experienced an invasion by foreign forces.
In 2012, a group of seven individuals who were part of an organization known as the Ceuta and Melilla Liberation Coordination Committee infiltrated the island and replaced the Spanish flag with the Moroccan flag. Although this invasion only lasted a few minutes, the Spanish forces managed to lower the foreign flag and capture the perpetrators. Nevertheless, technically, this event is considered a legitimate invasion. Report: Khaira Amaliya.
