"Pavlopetri, an ancient underwater city located in the southern waters of Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece, has become a fascinating archaeological mystery. In this report, we will uncover interesting findings that reveal some of the secrets of the underwater city. Source: Ancient Pages"
Pavlopetri is a unique archaeological site, estimated to be around 5,000 years old. Some even connect it to the legend of Atlantis, referring to it as the oldest city submerged under the sea. The city is located at a depth of three to four meters, with visible structures of buildings, roads, courtyards, and tombs.
It should be noted that Pavlopetri provides deep insights into the Mycenaean civilization and trading activities in the past. Its inhabitants are seen to be engaged in both local and international trade throughout the Mediterranean region, and the surrounding sandy bay serves as an optimal anchorage for Bronze Age ships.
However, in 2009, an impressive discovery was made in Pavlopetri. Scientists found fragments of pottery from the late Neolithic period, indicating that the age of this city may reach 5,000 to 6,000 years.
Doctor Nic Flemming, a marine geoarchaeologist, described this discovery as extraordinary. The presence of the pottery provides evidence that Pavlopetri is an ancient port city, involved in trading activities in the Mediterranean region. Interestingly, Pavlopetri is much older than many other underwater cities that have been investigated, and almost the entire city layout, including main roads and residential buildings, can still be seen.
