Dream - Visiting graves is a sunnah worship recommended by the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Because there are many wisdoms that can be obtained from this activity. One of them is to remind us of the afterlife. As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, many Muslims in Indonesia visit the graves of their family members to pray for the deceased. When visiting graves, usually someone will clean the grave of their deceased family member, then recite verses from the Quran and pray for forgiveness from Allah SWT.
"In addition, it is not uncommon for us to bring flowers to be scattered on the grave and water to be poured on the burial site. There is a prayer that can be practiced when pouring water on the grave. Praying while pouring water on the grave is one way to express respect to the deceased. Even the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) did it for his son named Ibrahim."
In the book Tuhfatul Muhtaj, as quoted by Husnan M Thaib in the book entitled The Virtue of Visiting the Sick and the Procedure for Dealing with the Deceased, the Prophet Muhammad SAW recited the following prayer when pouring water on his son's grave.
This is the prayer recitation for watering the grave that was taught by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): "Allahumma aj'al haadzaal maa'a bardan wasalaaman fii qabrihi/haa wasqi tsaraahu/haa birahmatika yaa arhamarrahimin." Translation: "O Allah, make this water cool and peaceful in his/her grave, and quench his/her thirst with Your mercy, O Most Merciful."
Translation: "Meaning: 'O Allah, make this water a source of coolness and safety in their grave, and pour Your mercy into their grave with Your mercy, O Most Compassionate of the Compassionate.'"
Watering graves during a visit to the cemetery is actually considered a recommended practice by the scholars. Remember that the Prophet Muhammad SAW also did this when visiting the grave of his son, Ibrahim. Watering the graves is certainly done when there is no rain. If the grave soil is already wet from the rainwater, then there is no need to water it again.
(Narrated by Abu Daud)
It turns out there is a meaning behind watering this grave, which is to provide comfort to the grave digger in the realm of Barzakh. Surely, this is a metaphorical meaning. The water that is poured is likened to the prayers that have been previously recited. It is the prayers and recitation of verses from the Quran that provide comfort to the grave digger.
However, it should be noted that when watering graves, it is necessary to use pure water. According to the opinion of Al Azra'i, watering graves with impure water is deemed makruh. Syaikh Muhammad bin Umar bin Ali bin Nawawi al-Jawi Abu Abdil Mu'thi, is of the opinion that watering graves with cold water is done with the intention of seeking coolness in the grave. According to him, it is not a problem if the water is mixed with a little bit of flowers because angels like pleasant smells.
Meanwhile, in the Book of Al-Mausu'ah al-Fiqhiyyah, it is mentioned that scholars of the Hanafi, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools judge the act of pouring water on graves after burial as a recommended practice (sunnah) because the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also did it on the grave of Sa'ad bin Mu'adz and instructed it at the grave of Uthman bin Mazh'un.
However, al-Albani in Silsilah Al-Ahadits Al-Dha'ifah explains that there are many hadiths about pouring water on the grave that have defects. However, he also found a hadith with a strong chain of narration in Awsath al-Thabrani that the Prophet Muhammad poured water on the grave of his son, Ibrahim. Al-Albani mentioned this hadith in Al-Shahih.
