Scientists are making a big fuss about the discovery of a rare blind digging mammal that has not been seen for almost a century.
For two years, researchers conducted a search in the sand dunes of South Africa for an endangered blind mole rat, which navigates tunnels using its sharp hearing and sensitivity to vibrations, as conveyed by the research team in this week's press release.
The last sighting of the De Winton golden mouse was 87 years ago on the Port Nolloth beach, a one-mile sandy coastline on the northwest coast of South Africa.
Its survival is threatened by diamond mining in its coastal sand habitat, according to the IUCN Red List.

The scientists search up to 11 million sand dune habitats every day to find the ground squirrel, said Esther Matthew, a senior field officer with EWT, in the release. The "golden" part of the name of the ground squirrel comes from the shiny appearance of its fur coat, which secretes oil to help the ground squirrel almost "swim" through the sand.

The rediscovery of this ground rat is part of a campaign to search for lost species launched in 2017 by the nature charity Global Wildlife Conservation, which has now changed its name to Re:Wild.

This project won the Guinness World Record in 2020 for the number of species it searched for: More than 2000 unseen species of animals, plants, and fungi for at least 10 years.
