"Dream - One of the participants of Clash of Champions, Sandy Kristian Waluyo, admitted feeling burdened by other people's expectations of him. Having failed to enter the Olympic training center multiple times, Sandy even felt depressed and locked himself in his room."
"\u201cI tried to join the national training from junior high school but failed, failed in 10th grade of high school, it was only in 11th grade that I finally got it and could pass,\u201d Sandy said in Denny Sumargo's Youtube channel, Thursday, July 11, 2024. He tried several times to participate in the national training since junior high school, but he only passed in his second year of high school. This made Sandy feel pressured because of the high expectations people had for him."
"It feels like being constantly pressured, because people's expectations are like 'oh, you must have passed' but in reality, I didn't pass again, didn't pass again," said Sandy.
Due to the immense pressure and high expectations, Sandy experienced depression. This was exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, which created a situation of extreme limitations. In those moments, Sandy chose to isolate herself in her room and cry over her failures. Moreover, she had dedicated time and made great efforts to participate in the Olympics since she was young.
"It hit me mentally. I even experienced depression. That was during the time of the pandemic. It was like staying at home all the time, not meeting people. I could lock myself in the room and cry alone because I couldn't meet people's expectations, afraid of disappointing my parents, and didn't want to disappoint myself," said Sandy. "Because the effort to qualify for the Olympic team is a great dedication from childhood," he added.
The same pressure was also felt by Sandy when participating in Clash of Champions. The recipient of a perfect GPA of 5.0 at the National University of Singapore (NUS) was stressed to the point of crying because of the competition. However, he was one of the favorite participants in the event. Sandy admitted to experiencing mental pressure in one of the episodes of Clash of Champions. Not because of the given problems, but because the atmosphere in the competition itself made him stressed to the point of crying.
"Getting mentally affected is not because of the game itself, but more because of the atmosphere, the pressure is like, oh, more towards stress, I even cried," said Sandy.
