Dream - Nighttime is a frightening time for some people. The problem is that's when the Earth is enveloped in darkness. Although the Sun is still there, the atmosphere of the day changes, replaced by the darkness of the sky adorned with stars and the moonlight. Everything will return to normal the next day when the Sun rises from the east. Such a sight is very common for humans.
However, what about the conditions outside space that are always dark? Meanwhile, the Sun remains in its position, emitting its very bright and warm light.
"Outside of space is even filled with shining stars. But why is it still dark outside of space? Some even wonder why outer space is not colorful like the blue sky seen on Earth during the day?"
These questions have actually been around for a long time, even before entering the 20th century. In science, these classic questions are known as Olbers' paradox, which refers to the mystery of the sky. It is mentioned that the night sky feels dark despite there being billions of stars in the universe. This paradox is taken from the name of a German astronomer named Heinrich Olbers.
"He proposed an answer that if the interstellar space contains matter like dust clouds, then it will absorb light, which keeps the sky dark."
However, Olbers' hypothesis is doubted by the first law of thermodynamics. This law states that interstellar matter that absorbs light will generate heat and then emit that light itself. In the 20th century, Olbers' paradox was finally resolved after the discovery that the universe continues to expand.
This development causes the light from distant galaxies to change into infrared, ultraviolet, and radio wave spectra.
The following is the translation of the 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "Light in various forms of micro waves is not visible to the human eye. Therefore, if we can see micro waves with the naked eye, the entire space will appear to shine. However, this theory was once again debunked after research showed that the Earth's atmosphere plays a role in why light is not visible in outer space."
Quoted from Orbital Today, light enters the nearly empty space like a vacuum. Because outer space has very little cosmic gas and dust, light does not have objects to reflect itself. However, it is different from Earth which has abundant cosmic gas and dust in its atmosphere so that the Sun can reflect its light.
The Sun's light moves straight until it encounters an object, and when it reflects in the atmosphere, it causes scattering in the spectrum of light visible to the human eye.
When the Earth rotates, the side that is not exposed to sunlight becomes dark, known as night. During the day, the interaction between photons and atoms, molecules, and atmospheric dust causes light scattering to be more even.
Most of the Earth's atmosphere scatters blue light because its wavelength is shorter than red light. This is why the sky appears blue during the day. The same goes for the planet Mars, which appears red. Although Mars' atmosphere is about 100 times thinner than Earth's, it is still enough to make its sky appear bluish-gray during the day.
When the Mars wind carries dust clouds from the surface, its sky becomes thinner and changes color to reddish.
"Very different if we are on a planet or satellite with a very thin atmosphere or even without an atmosphere like the Moon or Mercury. The sky in both places will appear black during both day and night. This can be seen from the photos taken by the Apollo spacecraft on the Moon. In a photo successfully captured during a bright sunny day, the sky on the Moon remains black."
