Kota yang Hilang di Abad ke-6 SM Akhirnya Ditemukan, Ada Pemandian Air Panasnya

"The Lost City in the 6th Century BC Finally Found, It Has Hot Springs"

They found an amazing monument and a collection of information that can enhance understanding about ancient Greek city.

A ancient city was identified by archaeologists in Palaiokastro, Serres, Greece. This ancient city's buildings are estimated to have been established in the late 6th century BC and lasted until the 6th century AD. Over the course of two years, research in the area was conducted by an archaeological team led by the Ephorate Antiquities Serres in collaboration with the French School of Athens.

Dimitria Malamidou, who heads the Ephorate of Antiquities of Serres, stated, "The location of Paleokastro is identified with one of the ancient cities in the lower Struma valley, which is known as an area of ancient historical sources."

The discovery revealed the secret that the region was originally ruled by the Bisaltian tribe from Tharakia. However, later on, the area became home to Greek inhabitants from the southern cities and the Kingdom of Macedonia.

Some findings at the site show the existence of Greek ceramics from the 6th century BC.

The discovery that occurred during the excavation also revealed the stages of development in the Hellenistic period, which is part of the Roman basilica fortress, equipped with a complex of hot water baths, a workshop for grape pressing during the Roman era, as well as two Christian churches of the basilica type with three aisles.

"In addition, it was conveyed by the head of research that several graves from various periods have been discovered during the excavation at the site."

"Discovery of the Macedonian Tomb"

Based on the inscriptions found inside the tomb, experts believe that the grave is a Macedonian type grave owned by the brothers Ipponakta and Dioscorides, as well as the grave of the boy Apollodorus who is historically recognized as a friend of Alexander the Great who settled in Amphipolis. The dating of these graves is adjusted according to the discovery of coins around the location, namely in the year 328 BC.

Researchers Conduct Excavation Project

In 1981, land leveling activities caused damage to Paleokastro hill, revealing a number of ancient building elements, architectural features, reliefs, and inscriptions from the 3rd century AD. In 1985, the first excavation project was conducted, uncovering the existence of a Roman building and walls from the Hellenistic period. Furthermore, in 1993, Marianna Karamberi led the first systematic excavation.
