Dream - The arrival of July 2024 is marked by the arrival of the month of Muharram, which is the Islamic New Year, as well as the first month in the Javanese calendar known as the month of Suro. According to KBBI, Muharram is the first month in the Hijri year, the calendar used by Muslims. Meanwhile, Satu Suro is the first day in the Javanese calendar.
Knowing the determination of 1 Muharram and 1 Suro is very important, especially for the community that still uses this calendar in their daily lives. The beginning of the month of Suro or Muharram this time falls on Sunday, July 7, 2024.
Besides being a moment of contemplation and self-reflection, to welcome the night of 1 Suro, Muslims are encouraged to perform voluntary practices. What are they? Here are 8 recommended practices for the night of 1 Suro in Islam:
Before carrying out various practices on the night of 1 Suro or 1 Muharram, Muslims are advised to recite the Prayer at the End of the Year. This prayer should preferably be recited at the end of the month of Dzulhijjah, before the arrival of the month of Muharram, three times. The change of day and month in the Hijri calendar occurs at maghrib time, so this prayer should be recited before maghrib time approaches. Here is the recitation of the prayer at the end of the year that you can make as a practice on the night of 1 Suro.

Translation: "Meaning: "My Lord, I seek forgiveness for my actions in this year that include what You have forbidden, while I have not had a chance to repent, my actions that You understand due to Your mercy, while You are capable of punishing me, and the actions (sins) that You have commanded me to repent from, while I have disobeyed You. My Lord, I hope that You accept my actions that You are pleased with in this year and my actions that are promised with Your rewards. Do not let me despair. O Lord, the Most Merciful.""
After performing the end-of-year prayer, Muslims are recommended to recite the prayer for the beginning of the year on the night of 1 Suro or 1 Muharram. This prayer should be recited after the Maghrib prayer, when entering 1 Muharram. The prayer for the beginning of the year is also encouraged to be recited three times. By reciting this prayer, Muslims are expected to receive blessings and generosity from Allah SWT in the new year.
The following is the translation of the given text from Bahasa to English while preserving the HTML tags: "Here is the reading of the prayer for the beginning of the year that you need to practice: اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الْأَبَدِيُّ الْقَدِيمُ الْأَوَّلُ وَعَلَى فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيمِ وَكَرِيمِ جَوْدِكَ الْمُعَوَّلِ، وَهَذَا عَامٌ جَدِيدٌ قَدْ أَقْبَلَ، أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَصْمَةَ فِيهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ وَأَوْلِيَائِهِ، وَالْعَوْنَ عَلَى هَذِهِ النَّفْسِ الْأَمَّارَةِ بِالسُّوءِ، وَالْأَشْتَغَالَ بِمَا يُقَرِّبُنِي إِلَيْكَ زُلْفَىٰ، يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ" Translation: "Here is the reading of the prayer for the beginning of the year that you need to practice: O Allah, You are the Eternal, the First, and upon Your great and noble grace and generosity, and the generosity of Your bestowed favor. This is a new year that has come. I ask You for protection from Satan and his allies in it, and for assistance against this soul that commands evil, and for preoccupation with what brings me closer to You, O Possessor of Majesty and Generosity."
Translation: "Meaning: 'My Lord, You are Eternal, Ancient, and the Beginning. Through Your great grace and noble generosity, You are the door of hope. The new year has arrived. I seek refuge in You from the temptations of Satan and his followers in this year. I also seek Your help in overcoming the desires that often drive me to do evil. I beseech Your guidance so that my daily activities bring me closer to Your mercy. O Lord, the Owner of Greatness and Majesty.'"
The emphasized practice of 1 Suro night in Islam is cutting nails. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, "There are five things that are considered part of the natural disposition (fitrah), which are cutting pubic hair, circumcision, trimming the mustache, plucking armpit hair, and cutting nails." Based on this hadith, Islamic jurists have determined that activities related to cleanliness and neatness, such as cutting pubic hair, plucking armpit hair, and cutting nails, are included in recommended practices (sunnah).
One of the highly recommended practices is to fast on the first day of Muharram. Fasting in Muharram, especially on the day of Ashura (10th Muharram), holds great virtue in Islam.
"The practice of the 1 Suro night that is also important to do is giving charity. Giving charity to those in need, whether in the form of money, food, or goods, is a recommended practice. This is a form of gratitude and sharing happiness. Of course, this practice is not only done on the 1 Suro night, but also on other days."
6. Increase Dhikr and Prayer Fill the night of Satu Suro with dhikr and prayer to Allah SWT to seek protection, blessings, and goodness in the new year. 7. Recite the Quran The recommended practice on the night of 1 Suro in Islam is to recite the Quran. Recite and contemplate the verses of the Quran, especially the surahs that have special virtues, such as Al-Fatihah, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas.
Continuing to maintain good relations not only strengthens the bond of brotherhood but also earns the pleasure of Allah SWT. As stated in the hadith Qudsi narrated by Tirmidzi & Abu Dawud, it is said that: "Whoever maintains good relations, I will maintain my mercy for him. And whoever severs ties, I will sever my mercy for him as well." (Narrated by Tirmidzi & Abu Dawud)
Continuing the bond is not only for people who have a good relationship, but also for those who are currently not in good terms with us. Having the intention to improve a strained or broken relationship must be implemented immediately. At least, we try to maintain good relationships with everyone.
