In a post on the TikTok account @sarah_2293, a teacher named Sarah recounts that many junior high school students at her school cannot read, and some do not even know the letters. Sarah also highlights the state of education in Indonesia, which she believes is not doing well. "Indonesia is not doing well. Many junior high school students cannot read and do not know the alphabet," she wrote.

"Besides being a problem for the next generation, this will also add work for junior high school teachers. Sarah said that she was assigned to teach the students how to read. This adds to her workload because she has to use time outside of teaching hours."

"Finally, the junior high school teacher received additional duties outside of teaching hours to teach students/i how to read," he said. He then questioned the role of parents at home. For him, every parent should monitor their child's development. Moreover, the lessons in junior high school are no longer at the level of teaching or memorizing letters A to Z. "Please, parents of students need to be sensitive to their own children; the junior high school lessons are already quite advanced, so they shouldn't have to teach their children from letters A-Z," he stated."

"Besides that, he also blames the students' teachers who are at the elementary school. He suspects that the teachers of these students do not teach about letters. He also questions the school's decision to pass the student even though they cannot read."

"Elementary school teachers, please help teach them letters. How can they finish elementary school without knowing letters and being unable to read?" she added. Sarah admitted that she actually doesn't mind if only 1 to 2 students can't read. However, at the junior high school where she teaches, Sarah found 30 students who still can't read."

"This made him and other teachers struggle to resolve the issue. Nevertheless, he couldn't do much besides staying enthusiastic and continuing to fight so that his students could read."

"Recently, it was discovered that dozens of students who could not read were at SMPN 1 Mangunjaya, Pangandaran Regency, West Java. The video also went viral in 2023."

The teacher from SMPN 1 Mangunjaya, Dian Eka Purnamasari, said that 29 students who enrolled in the 2023/2024 academic year cannot read because the teaching and learning process during their time in elementary school could not take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “Class 7 has 11 students, class 8 has 16 students, and class 9 has 2 students,” she stated.
