Dream - Batu Hajar Aswad is known by Muslims as a stone believed to have originated from heaven. It was first discovered by Prophet Ismail AS, then placed on the outer side of the Kaaba by Prophet Ibrahim AS. When performing the hajj or umrah pilgrimage, pilgrims will compete to pray near the Hajar Aswad and try to touch and kiss it. Kissing the Hajar Aswad is one of the recommended practices by Prophet Muhammad SAW, as he always kissed the stone while performing the circumambulation.
"In the past, the Black Stone consisted of pure white rocks with a size of about 30 cm, which emitted a bright light that could illuminate the entire Arabian Peninsula. However, over time, its light gradually dimmed until it eventually turned black."
Currently, the stone is no longer intact. Only 15 fragments remain, which have been embedded in a cement matrix as a binder, and then protected by a silver circle. Out of these 15 fragments, only 8 are visible from the surface. Hajar Aswad is often privileged by Muslims because it is believed to be the 'stone of heaven' and is part of the tradition of the Prophet when in the Holy City of Mecca.
Some people even go overboard in glorifying this stone. According to historical records, the Black Stone was once seized by Abu Thahir Sulaiman bin Abu Said Al Husain Al Janabi in the year 317 H. At that time, the Black Stone was forcefully pried out of the Kaaba. After various efforts were made, the stone was finally returned to its original place in the year 339 H. Due to the belief of the Islamic community in the sanctity of the Black Stone, many Hajj pilgrims strive to kiss the Black Stone even though often times it is not feasible.
It is important to understand that although Hajar Aswad holds a deep spiritual meaning for Muslims, both in historical and religious contexts, in essence, Hajar Aswad is just a stone. As a physical object, the stone does not have the ability to directly provide benefits or harm to humans.
In Islam, the blessing or specialness associated with the Black Stone is more symbolic and spiritual. This stone becomes a symbol of unity among Muslims in performing the Hajj and Umrah rituals, as well as a reminder of obedience and piety to Allah SWT. However, this blessing or virtue is not inherent in the stone itself, but originates from the will and grace of Allah SWT.
Therefore, it is important for Muslims not to associate or worship the Black Stone (Hajar Aswad) as an object that possesses the same power or privilege as Allah SWT. A true understanding of the Black Stone as a symbol and reminder of the importance of obedience to Allah SWT will help Muslims maintain the purity of monotheism and perform worship with sincerity and devotion to the Creator.
"Hajar Aswad cannot bring benefit or harm. There is also no connection between this stone and the Day of Judgment."
"If one day the Hajar Aswad is completely eroded, it is actually not a big problem. Nevertheless, the Hajj and Umrah rituals remain valid. However, there is no need to worry because the Hajar Aswad will not erode quickly. Based on research, the hardness level of this stone reaches Mohs scale 7, which is equivalent to the hardness of gemstones. In other words, this stone requires a very long time to erode, even though it is often exposed to friction from the hands, cheeks, and faces of people who touch and kiss it."
