Why Do Tarantula Animals Have Hairs? It Turns Out This Is Their Function

"Tarantula is an animal covered in hair. However, most spiders do not have a "hairy" body. Tarantulas are hairy for several reasons. Unlike mammalian hair made of keratin, the hair of tarantulas, called setae, is made of chitin. Chitin is a derivative of glucose that also forms the exoskeleton of spiders."

Some of these hairs act as sensory organs, helping the tarantula to smell, taste, touch, and detect vibrations from the surrounding world. These sensory hairs are primarily located on the spider's legs and mouth, functioning as transmitters of information to the sensory nerves located in the spider's "skin" or cuticle.

The most sensitive hairs, called trichobothria, function to detect even the slightest changes in air movement due to the attachment of the “ball and socket” on the membrane in the cuticle. These hairs help guide the tarantula in capturing or responding to prey that is escaping.

In 1883, German zoologist Friedrich Dahl named it "hearing hair" when he observed that the hairs moved in response to the sound of a violin. The hairs that are sensitive to the chemicals used for smell and taste are blunt and hollow. They also play a role in reproduction and help tarantulas find mates.

“Tarantula males wander in search of female burrows. If they walk near the burrow, their contact-sensitive hairs are stimulated by sex pheromones bound to silk strands near the entrance of the burrow, allowing the male to locate the female.”
"Jerome Rovner, former associate editor of the Journal of Arachnology by the American Arachnological Society,"

"Source : Live Science"

The translation of "Fungsi Rambut Tarantula." to English is "Function of Tarantula Hair."

Tarantula hair has three other functions. First, they help the tarantula, which is cold-blooded, regulate its body temperature. According to Rovner, tarantula hair functions to trap a layer of air around the body and additional cuticle, creating a form of insulation. By having thick hair, tarantulas can remain active even during the cold nights in environments like tropical rainforests and deserts.

The long hair also serves as a kind of waterproof layer that can "repel water if the tarantula is submerged in a flood," said Rovner. The underside of the tarantula's leg hairs has "sticky" properties, which help them climb slippery vertical surfaces. This dense hair structure is known as scopula and also plays a role in capturing prey.

Many tarantulas in the Western Hemisphere also have up to 1 million sharp, deadly hairs on their abdomen that they use for defense. These spiny hairs or urticaria can stick to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes of predators, causing irritation.
