Dream - Often considered disgusting food by Western countries, it turns out that durian is widely consumed by the Chinese. The Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) notes that Indonesian durian commodities are highly sought after in China.
According to the Director General of National Export Development of the Ministry of Trade, Didi Sumedi, durian has a highly competitive market in China. The total estimated demand in 2024 reached US$8 billion or around Rp126.893 trillion (exchange rate of Rp15,861 per US dollar).
"The most trending topic is durian. Durian has a very prospective market, especially in China,"

Didi said, the demand for durian increases every year to China. In 2022, the demand for durian reached US$4.5 billion, then in 2023 US$6.7 billion.
"It is estimated that it will increase again this year. Because it is still a trend there," he explained. Considering the high demand for durian, he requested the plantation farmers to continue improving the quality of the fruit."
"We continue to convey to plantation farmers that there is a significant demand to be fulfilled, even China's demand alone can reach USD8 billion for durians," explained Didi.
"In China, Didi continued, they really like the Montong and Musang King durian varieties, so they are currently developing both types of durian in several regions, such as in Central Java, Sulawesi, and Palu."
"We are currently developing local montong like in Central Java, where there is a combination of Montong with local durian. In Sulawesi, in Palu, local durian is also being developed, which is as big as Montong, so the flesh is thick."

Instead of high interest, Didi said that durian is not the highest income fruit commodity. He said that there are still other fruits that are in demand in foreign markets, such as pineapple, banana, mangosteen, and avocado. "I think not (the highest commodity), there are still pineapple and banana. Because durian has only recently become an industry," Didi concluded.
