Until the end of 2023, BSI is optimistic that the number of customers can reach 20 million. In order to achieve this, BSI has partnered with FEB UI to continue promoting literacy and financial inclusion in Islamic finance. As of May 2023, BSI has reached 19 million customers, making it the 5th largest bank in Indonesia in terms of customer numbers. The number of BSI customers has been continuously growing since its establishment in 2021. In just 2.5 years, BSI has gained 5 million customers.
According to BSI's Director of Finance and Strategy, Ade Cahyo Nugroho, this growth rate is inseparable from the efforts of literacy and inclusion of Islamic finance that have been continuously promoted by BSI since the beginning. "Our customers have increased by 5 million people in 2.5 years, now reaching 19 million and we are the 5th largest bank in terms of customer base. Maybe by the end of this year, there will be 20 million customers," said Cahyo in a public lecture held at the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Islamic Business, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia (UI).
Cahyo added that currently BSI continues to strive to improve Sharia financial inclusion, which has only reached 12.12%, lagging behind the overall financial index which reached 85.10%. The lack of ideal inclusion figures is also in line with the still low level of Sharia financial literacy, which is only at 9.14% in 2022.
"Therefore, in the general lecture, Cahyo invited all academic community members at FEB UI to collectively enhance the inclusion and literacy of Islamic finance in Indonesia. 'BSI is ready to collaborate in increasing the awareness and activation of Islamic banking services within the campus environment, which is built within one ecosystem, so that the presence of Islamic banks can be beneficial for all members of the FEB-UI Campus, which amount to more than 6,000 people, including 397 lecturers and around 314 employees,' he said."
Say Cahyo.
The built ecosystem is expected to involve the roles of students, lecturers, and related employees.
The following is the translation of the provided 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "As for the ecosystem, it is built in the form of lectures and FGDs (Focus Group Discussions) on Islamic banking, internship or internship programs at BSI (Bank Syariah Indonesia), educational assistance in the form of BSI Scholarship programs and BSI Sociopreneur for high-achieving students, as well as the utilization of products and services of Islamic banking, including savings and financing in accordance with Sharia principles."
"BSI as the largest sharia bank in Indonesia is committed to continuously providing literacy and offering sharia financial products needed by the community through an integrated financial ecosystem. This is to enhance sharia financial inclusion for the Indonesian society. Therefore, with the presence of this activity, we are also optimistic that sharia banks can become a financial choice for young people in the future," he explained.
"In the same occasion, there was also a practitioner of Islamic finance who is also the Chairman of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) Commissioner Board for the period 2012-2017, Muliaman D. Hadad."
Muliaman mentioned that strengthening the Islamic financial ecosystem needs to be driven through collaboration of all stakeholders. He believes that the Islamic financial ecosystem is extraordinarily vast, encompassing commercial and social Islamic finance, halal industry, business community, and supporting ecosystem of Islamic economy. "The ecosystem I am referring to is not only Islamic finance but also all stakeholders or participants within the Islamic economic system. This becomes part of the ecosystem that needs to be accelerated in its progress," he said.
Dean of FEB UI, Teguh Dartanto, added that efforts to strengthen the Islamic ecosystem cannot be separated from the great potential of Islamic economy and finance in Indonesia. The national penetration of Islamic finance is still around 7% in the past 5 years. Therefore, according to him, the growth space for Islamic finance is still wide. Considering that this country has a majority Muslim population, around 86.7% of the total population of approximately 270 million people.
"Education world produces quality talents, we cannot do it alone. We need support from the industrial world. So that our graduates have a link and match. And our education, our teaching also has a link and match between the world of theory and the world of practice, which in my opinion is very important how the collaboration between the world of education and the industrial world," he said.
In that opportunity, BSI also provided support for the renovation of the secretariat rooms of the Regular S1 Islamic Economics and Regular S1 Islamic Business Study Programs of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia. By improving these facilities, it is hoped that there will be encouragement for FEB UI in producing graduates who have a foundation of basic knowledge of Islamic business accompanied by critical thinking, communicative, ethical, and socially responsible high abilities. In addition, this is also aimed at enabling academics to have good research skills, so that they can compete in the global halal industry in accordance with Islamic values.
