Dream - Lazada announced that they have carried out layoffs of their employees in Singapore, the exact number of which was not disclosed. This news is quite surprising, as this e-commerce company was claimed to be successful during last year's 12.12 promotion.

"Unfortunately, the Lazada spokesperson refused to disclose how many employees in Singapore or Southeast Asia were affected by it. The spokesperson also did not comment on whether the staff had received severance packages."

It is mentioned that layoffs were also conducted in October 2023. This layoff news is certainly very surprising considering that in December 2023, Alibaba injected funds of US$634 million or equivalent to Rp9.8 trillion into Lazada.
Established in 2012, Lazada is present in six countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Lazada became a subsidiary of Alibaba Group Holding after the Chinese technology giant acquired its shares in 2016 to expand its presence in Southeast Asia. Commenting on the layoffs, Chan Ih-Ming, the executive director of Digital Industry Singapore (DISG), said they are working with Lazada and the government to find solutions for affected employees.
"DISG collaborates with Lazada and relevant government agencies to assist employees affected in finding alternative job opportunities," he said. "While each company must decide the best way to position their business and workforce given the current economic conditions, the digital economy in Asia continues to grow and we are confident in the long-term growth potential of Singapore's technology sector," he added.
DISG is a joint office of the Economic Development Board, Enterprise Singapore, and the Infocomm Media Development Authority. Its goal is to transform the government's engagement with the technology sector by serving as a single point of contact for the industry. According to leaks from the Instagram account @ecommurz, this layoff at Lazada has affected employees at all management levels, including VP and C-level positions at Lazada's regional offices.
Not only that, employees from various divisions such as Customer Care, Product, Procurement, Campaign, Design, Commercial, Platform Governance, Marketing, and Merchandise are also affected by layoffs.
