"Dream - A man is suspected of stealing US$23,000 or around Rp355 million from three passengers on a flight from Vietnam to Singapore. The man, named Zhang Xiuqiang, is a 52-year-old Chinese national who was flying with Scoot, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines."
The translation of "Penumpang Curi Uang" to English is "Passenger Steals Money".
To CNN, the airline's spokesperson said that they became aware of the theft after receiving a report from a passenger. The incident occurred on a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Singapore on December 16, 2023.
"Our cabin crew was informed by a passenger about an alleged theft in the cabin and activated the Airport Police Division," said the spokesperson. "The passenger involved was escorted off the plane by airport authorities for further investigation, and the disembarkation process went on as usual for our other passengers," he continued."
"According to the indictment read in court and broadcast by Singapore's public broadcaster, Channel NewsAsia, Zhang is accused of stealing money from three different passengers."
He was reported to have taken 3 million Vietnamese dong ($123) from a passenger's backpack, and 510 million Vietnamese dong ($20,950) and a 50 Singapore dollar bill ($38) from another passenger's black bag. He is also suspected of taking 1,000 Singapore dollars and 930 Singapore dollars ($700) from an envelope found inside the gray bag of a third passenger. The total amount stolen is valued at US$23,000 or around Rp355 million.
"Zhang has been detained for police investigation. If found guilty of theft, he could face a sentence of up to three years in prison, a fine, or both."
"Scoot cannot provide further details regarding this case, but has reminded crew and passengers to remain vigilant on the aircraft. "Our cabin crew are trained to be alert and to notify authorities if there is any suspicious behavior on board," the statement said. "We also advise our customers to keep their valuables with them at all times," Scoot's statement continued."
"Theft of cabins is a federal crime in many countries and occurs more often than most travelers think. The Hong Kong police in October warned of a surge in thefts on airplanes after discovering a crime syndicate that was stealing credit cards from passengers."
"In 2019, Cathay Pacific Airways Hong Kong announced a crackdown on petty theft of food supplies on board the aircraft by cabin crew. Meanwhile, a man was arrested in Taiwan in September for allegedly stealing cash from another passenger's cabin baggage on a flight from Tokyo to Taipei."
