"Dream - Some young people in South Korea feel so isolated from the outside world. This has led the South Korean government to offer them monthly incentives to socialize more. The local Ministry of Gender Equality and Family provides up to US$500 or around Rp7.7 million per month to 'isolated' individuals. This is done to support healthy psychological and emotional stability."
The translation of "Kaum Introvert di Korsel" to English is "Introverts in South Korea."
The local Health and Social Institute notes that about 3.1% of Koreans aged 19 to 39 are lonely and withdrawn.
"Defined as a person who lives in a confined space, in a state of being cut off from the outside world for more than a certain period of time, and experiences difficulties living normally," according to the ministry's report, quoted from CNN, Thursday, January 4, 2024."
The percentage represents about 338,000 people, with 40% of them starting to isolate themselves since adolescence.
Various factors are estimated to be the causes, such as financial difficulties, mental illness, family problems, or health challenges. Monthly allowances will be available for 'loners' aged 9 to 24 who live in families with incomes below the national average income.
The group that receives benefits is families living on an income of less than 5.4 million won per month or around Rp64 million.
"The youth can apply for this program at the local administrative welfare center; their guardians, counselors, or teachers can also apply on their behalf."
"Closed-off adolescents may experience slower physical growth due to an irregular lifestyle and unbalanced nutrition, and tend to face mental difficulties such as depression due to the loss of social roles and delayed adaptation," said the ministry."
"This report also details several case studies, including a young student who has suffered from mental health issues and difficulties socializing since adolescence. He struggled to adjust to college, ultimately choosing not to attend classes, and withdrawing further into himself."
"This report also details future plans for further action, such as distributing guidelines to local governments, enhancing social safety nets for young people and early detection systems, and working more closely with youth welfare facilities such as shelters or rehabilitation centers."
