"Dream - Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) Ministry of Finance speaks up about netizens' tweet claiming that their friend had to pay import duty for a coffin when bringing back their father's body from Malaysia."
The story began when the owner of the account X @ClarissaIcha told the story of her friend. "Yesterday, she attended her friend's father's funeral, who passed away in Penang. This friend told me that at the airport, she had to pay a 30% customs duty on the price of her father's coffin, as it was considered a luxury item!" she wrote. "Well, coffins are indeed not cheap, but (insert annoyed emoji). There was no time to argue and wait for it to go viral. Too much," she expressed.
Special Staff of the Minister of Finance for Strategic Communication of the Ministry of Finance, Yustinus Prastowo, stated that a coffin is not included in the items subject to import duties and taxes (PDRI), so it is exempt from duty charges.
"There is no fee determination for the coffin. That there are costs or charges from the funeral cargo handling party is the cost of managing the corpse (warehouse rental, ambulance, etc.), in which there are no import duties and taxes."
He said on the official X account @Prastow.
According to Merdeka.com, the exemption of import duties for coffins is regulated in the Minister of Finance Decree (KMK) Number 138/KMK.05/1997 regarding the Exemption of Import Duties on Imports or Other Packaging Containing Corpses or Cremated Remains.
"Besides the exemption of import duties, the coffin will be provided with Rush Handling or Immediate Service facilities."
Regarding the report from user account X @ClarissaIcha stating that a 30 percent customs fee is imposed on the price of the coffin, the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) confirms that no data related to the shipment of coffins and corpses from Penang, Malaysia, has been found. DJBC requests individuals who are charged with customs fees for the shipment of coffins to verify the billing details with the cargo or agent responsible for the shipment or handling of the corpse.
"Mbak@ClarissaIchakami is still waiting for your good intention to provide additional explanations. Since yesterday, BC friends have also been trying to ask for your explanation. Your response is very normative and far from an effort to reveal the actual facts. Please do not spread hoaxes."
