Dream - What brand of smartphone does Friend Dream use? If using Apple products, iPhone, which is famous for its premium price, you belong to the lower class of smartphone users. Populix Study titled "Indonesian Mobile Phone Purchase Behavior" found that smartphones from South Korea, Samsung, are the most widely used devices by Indonesian citizens. This finding was obtained from a survey of 1,096 male and female respondents to study the purchasing habits of Indonesian society in buying smartphones and the payment methods used for transactions.
The study found that Samsung branded smartphones are the most widely used devices with a percentage of 32% among respondents. This is followed by two Chinese smartphone products, Xiaomi (24%) and Oppo (23%). Meanwhile, Apple's device, iPhone, is used by 18% of the respondents, and Vivo (13%) holds the last position.
Referring to the data from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology in 2022, it is known that 89 percent or around 167 million people in Indonesia have used smartphones.
The survey conducted in August 2023 also shows that the majority, or about 67 percent, of respondents feel satisfied with having one smartphone. Meanwhile, 30 percent of respondents feel comfortable using two smartphones, 2 percent of respondents use three smartphones, and only 1 percent of respondents admit to having more than three smartphones.
There are several reasons that encourage Indonesians to have more than one smartphone. The most common reason is the use of each smartphone for different purposes (80%). Users who have more than one smartphone also claim to need an additional phone as a backup (47%), to increase memory capacity (29%), to accommodate different mobile operators on each smartphone (15%), and to compare packages offered by mobile operators and find one that suits their needs (13%).
The majority of respondents last changed their smartphones less than 3 years ago. In more detail, around 36 percent of respondents changed their smartphones around 1 to 2 years ago, 28 percent made the replacement within less than a year ago. 22 percent replaced their smartphones 2-3 years ago, and only a small portion replaced their smartphones more than 3 years ago.
Motivation for respondents to change smartphones is varied, including smartphones no longer supporting the latest operating system (38%), smartphone memory capacity has reached the maximum limit (33%). There are also those motivated to change smartphones because of the latest features (14%), favorite smartphone brands releasing new series (6%), and following the latest smartphone trends (2%).
Not only do they love changing smartphones, but the majority of Indonesian society apparently prefers new smartphones (95%) rather than "second-hand" smartphones (5%). To buy these new smartphones, respondents are more inclined to shop directly in stores (77%). The main reasons for buying smartphones at the counter are feeling safer and more trustworthy (82%), being able to see and try the products before buying (74%), feeling that the payment system is more secure (35%), and being able to enjoy special promotions (21%).
"While respondents who choose to buy a new smartphone online feel that they can get a lot of promotions and discounts when shopping online (73%). Buying smartphones online is also considered easier to compare product prices from various online stores (67%), as well as the prices offered online are more affordable (65%)."
While choosing the type of smartphone to buy, respondents consider the RAM capacity (78%), smartphone memory capacity (65%), affordable price (60%), battery capacity (56%), camera quality (55%). Other considerations for smartphone buyers in Indonesia are trusted brands (52%), pre-installed applications on smartphones (24%), and the presence of the latest models (22%).
To make transactions, respondents tend to prefer paying in cash or using debit cards (90%) rather than using credit cards (5%) or pay later (5%). The main reason for choosing cash payment is because the process is easier and faster without involving complicated administration (69%). Cash buyers also claim to want to avoid debt (69%), and there are special purchase promotions for cash or debit card payments (26%).
