Dream - Hundreds of Indonesian Hajj pilgrims died while in Saudi Arabia. Extreme hot weather is reported to have affected the condition of the pilgrims. The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) reported that 136 Hajj pilgrims have died as of Monday, June 17, 2024.

Head of the Hajj Health Center of the Ministry of Health, Liliek Marhaendro Susilo, said that three of the deceased pilgrims died due to heat stroke. Heat stroke is when the body experiences a drastic increase in temperature, even reaching 40 degrees Celsius or higher. "Hopefully the handling can be better continuously. That means it is an indicator that we handle heat stroke patients better," said Liliek, Tuesday, June 18, 2024.

Meanwhile, the number of sick Hajj pilgrims this year tends to decrease compared to last year. This indication can be seen from the unused beds provided at the Mina Health Center.

"From 20 beds, 5 beds are vacant. So that is an indicator that Alhamdulillah our community is healthier compared to the previous year," said Liliek. In another part, Liliek revealed that health workers in Mina had difficulty distributing medicine in the dormitories. The workers, he continued, were prohibited from bringing vehicles, so the distribution of medicine for the Hajj pilgrims could only rely on walking."

"It takes quite some time. That's what sometimes makes its availability during peak times seem scarce. But generally, the medicine is still sufficient," he said. This year, the hajj season is hit by extreme heat with temperatures ranging from 45 to 48 degrees Celsius. Saudi authorities urge pilgrims to adhere to the established health guidelines.

The Saudi Ministry of Health also instructs the congregation to use a small water sprayer to cool their faces in high temperatures."

Hajj officers have also anticipated extreme heat by installing air coolers that emit water to various points. Pilgrims are expected not to feel hot and to get refreshed through the system.
