"Dream - Jeans pants generally have nine parts or basic features that have not changed for 150 years.\r\n\r\nAnd one of the parts that remains is the rivet or commonly called paku keling in Indonesia."
Small objects resembling mini buttons are often found attached to the intersections of stitches or at each end of the pockets of jeans. And most people do not know the function of these rivets, which are usually made of copper.
Some people may not pay too much attention to this rivet. They consider rivets as decorations to make jeans look sturdy and strong. Or consider rivets as part of the design of jeans pockets.
"However, these rivets are not only for aesthetic reasons. Rivets have an interesting history and are installed in jeans for a purpose."
Since the Gold Rush or massive gold mining in California in 1848, the miners could not work comfortably because their pants often slipped. In addition, the pockets of their pants quickly tore when frequently used to hold mining results.
One of Levi Strauss' customers (the person who popularized jeans), Jacob Davis, was a tailor from Reno, Nevada.
"He has an idea of using metal fasteners to bind bags and jeans together. He then made copper rivets to reinforce the edges and ends of pants that tend to tear easily."
Jeans with rivets made by Davis eventually became popular in Reno. Of course, Davis wanted to patent the idea to protect his invention. Unfortunately, this man did not have enough funds for it.
In 1872, Davis wrote a letter to Strauss and offered a deal. Strauss accepted Davis' offer. After handling the legal process, Strauss began producing copper-riveted jeans since then.
The Davis invention was patented on May 20, 1873. He also became the production manager for Strauss jeans company.
Thanks to these people and Davis' rivet invention, jeans pants can last a very long time.
