9 Prayers to be Read After Obligatory Prayers

Dream – After completing the five daily prayers, do not rush to leave. Make it a habit to recite prayers after finishing the obligatory prayers. In the series of obligatory prayers, there are several prayers to be recited, including the prayer that is obligatory to be practiced.

Praying after obligatory prayers is recommended because we are still in a state of purity and in a solemn atmosphere after worship. Remembering Allah and praying after obligatory prayers is the recommendation of the Prophet Muhammad to his followers. As the Prophet Muhammad said:

يَزَالُ لِسَانُكَ رَطْبًا مِنْ ذِكْرِ اللهِ

Meaning: “Let your tongue always be moist with remembrance of Allah.” (HR.At-Tirmidzi 5/458 and Ibn Majah 2/1246, see Shahiih Sunan At-Tirmidzi 3/139 and  Sunan Ibn Majah 2/317)

One of the obligatory worship that a Muslim must perform every day is the obligatory prayer. It is not just about praying, but there are also those who regularly complete their worship by performing various recommended acts such as remembrance and prayer.

Prayer Procedure

Here is the prayer procedure:

• Facing the qibla
• Reciting hamdalah or praise, istighfar (seeking forgiveness), and salawat (sending blessings upon the Prophet)
• With a soft voice and fear
• Believing that it will be fulfilled

The best times to pray are as follows:

• Between the call to prayer (adhan) and the iqamah
• Before and after the prayer time
• The last third of the night
• All day on Friday
• Between Dhuhr and Asr, and between Asr and Maghrib
• When completing the recitation of the Qur'an
• When it is raining
• When performing Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba)
• When facing enemies in the battlefield
• It is recommended to repeat the prayer 3 (three) times

Prayers After Obligatory Prayers

1. Reciting Istighfar Three Times

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ الْعَظِـيْمِ الَّذِيْ لَااِلَهَ اِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّوْمُ وَأَتُوْبُ إِلَيْهِ

Astaghfirullah hal adzim, aladzi lailaha illa huwal hayyul qoyyum wa atubu ilaih

The hope is that we will always be forgiven by Allah SWT. Because as human beings, we are not free from sins.

2. Prayer Containing Praise for Allah

A collection of prayers after prayers starts with praise for Allah that should be recited after obligatory prayers:

لا إلَهَ إلَّا اللَّهُ وحْدَهُ لا شَرِيكَ له، اللَّهُمَّ لا مَانِعَ لِما أعْطَيْتَ، ولَا مُعْطِيَ لِما مَنَعْتَ، ولَا يَنْفَعُ ذَا الجَدِّ مِنْكَ الجَدُّ 

Laa ilaha illallah wahdahu laa syarika lah, lahul mulku walahul hamdu wa huwa ‘ala kulli sya’in qodir, Allahumma laa mani’a lima a’thoita wala mu’thiya lima mana’ta, wa laa yanfa’u dzal jaddi minkal jaddu.

Meaning: “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, who has no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and all praise is due to Him. And He is able to do all things. O Allah, there is no one who can prevent what You give and no one who can give what You prevent, and wealth (and position) of a person is of no use in avoiding punishment (divine wrath) from You.” (HR.Bukhari and Muslim)

3. Recitation of Salawat

Don't forget, you can also recite salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet Muhammad. Generally, the pronunciation of the salawat is as follows:

للَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلىَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلىَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَماَ صَلَّيْتَ عَلىَ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ وَعَلىَ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ إِنـَّكَ حَمِيْدٌ مَجِيْدٌ اَللَّهُمَّ باَرِكْ عَلىَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلىَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَماَ باَرَكْتَ عَلىَ إِبْرَهِيْمَ وَعَلىَ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ إِنـَّكَ حَمِيْدٌ مَجِيْدٌ

Allohumma sholli ‘alaa muhammad, wa ‘alaa aali muhammad, kamaa sollaita ‘alaa ali ibrahim, wa baarik ‘alaa muhammad, wa ‘alaa aali muhammad, kamaa barakta ‘ala aali ibrahim, fil ‘alamina innaka hamiidummajiid.

Meaning: “O Allah, bestow grace and peace upon Muhammad. And also bestow grace and peace upon the family of Muhammad, as You have bestowed grace and peace upon the family of Ibrahim. Bestow blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You have bestowed blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, in all worlds. Indeed, You are worthy of praise and glory.” (HR.Muslim)

4. Prayer for Safety in the World and the Hereafter

The next prayer in the collection of prayers after prayer is to seek safety in the world and the hereafter.

The following is the prayer that you need to memorize:

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rabbanaa Aatinaa Fiddunyaa Hasanatan Wafil Aakhirati Hasanatan Waqinaa Adzaabannaar

Meaning: “Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the hereafter and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” (QS.Al Baqarah: 201)

5. Prayer for Good Behavior

Prayer to avoid various negative or bad qualities and to be able to behave well. The following is the prayer:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

allahumma inni as-aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqon thoyyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqobbalan

Meaning:“O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and accepted deeds.” (HR.Ibnu Majah)

6. Prayer to be Kept Away from Envy

The following is the Prayer for Protection from Envy:

رَبَّنَا فِرْلَنَا وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالْإِيمَانِ وَلَا تَجْعَلْ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلًّا لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ رَؤُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Rabbana firlana wali ikhwaninal ladziina sabaquunaa bil imani wa laa taj’al fi quluubinaa ghillan lil ladzina amanu rabbana innaka raufurrahim

Meaning: “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.” (QS.Al-Hasyr 10).

7. Prayer for the Safety of Parents

As a child, you not only have to fulfill your obligations at home. Remember to always mention the names of your parents in one of the 9 prayers after obligatory prayers.

The following is the prayer:

رَبِّ اغْفِرْلِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ

Rabbighfirli waliwalidayya walil mu’minina yauma yaqumul hisab

Meaning: “O our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established.” (QS.Ibrahim: 41)

8. Prayer for All Requests and Repentance to be Accepted

So that all requests and repentance are accepted, do not forget to read this prayer in the collection of prayers after prayer. Not only after prayer, it is advisable to read this prayer every night before going to sleep.

The following is the prayer:

رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ، وَتُبْ عَلَيْنَا إِنَّكَ أَنتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ.

Rabbanaa taqabbal minnaa innaka antassamii’ul ‘aliim, watub ‘alainaa innaka antat tawwaabur rahiim.

Meaning: “O our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing. And accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.” (QS. Al Baqarah: 127-128).

9. Prayer of Sapu Jagat

Known as the prayer of Sapu Jagat, this prayer contains a request for continuous protection. Not only that, the meaning of this prayer also includes a request to always be protected from the punishment of hellfire.

Here is the prayer:

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rabbanā, ātinā fid dunyā hasanah, wa fil ākhirati hasanah, wa qinā ‘adzāban nār

Meaning: “Our Lord, give us goodness in this world and goodness in the hereafter. Protect us from the punishment of the Hellfire.”
