Facebook Parent Company, Meta, Fined Rp14 Billion per Day by Norway for Data Violations

Dream - The Norwegian data protection authority has imposed a fine of 1 million crowns, equivalent to Rp1.4 billion per day, on Facebook's parent company, Meta. The fine was imposed because Facebook was accused of data violation issues.

The Irish data regulator, Datatilsynet, previously stated that Meta could not harvest user data in Norway. The personal data in question is the physical location of users used to target ads to them.

Datatilsynet refers to this practice as behavioral advertising, a business model commonly used by large technology companies.

Meta was given a deadline until August 4th to prove to the regulator that they have addressed this issue.

"Starting next Monday, a daily fine of 1 million crowns (equivalent to Rp1.4 billion) will take effect," said Tobias Judin, Head of the International Department of Datatilsynet, to Reuters.

The fine itself is planned to be imposed until November 3, 2023. Moreover, the regulator can make this fine permanent by referring to the European Data Protection Board.

This is because the European Data Protection Board has similar authority if they approve the decision of the Norwegian regulator.

If this is agreed upon, the scope of the fine sanctions can also extend throughout Europe. However, Datatilsynet has not taken this step yet.

The fine that will be imposed on Meta is believed to have broader implications for Meta's business in Europe.

In response, Meta Platforms has requested the Norwegian court to stop the fine sanctions imposed by the regulator.

To the court, Meta has requested a temporary suspension of the order. The petition will be submitted on August 22nd, during a two-day hearing. Datatilsynet said that Meta Facebook is attempting to stop the imposition of the fine.
