Dream - As a chosen human being, the Prophet Muhammad was given various privileges by Allah, one of which was the ability to hear the voices of those being tortured in the grave. In a hadith narrated by Muslim, Za'id bin Tsabit said:

At the time when the Prophet Muhammad was in the garden of Bani Najjar, riding a donkey and we accompanied him, suddenly the donkey deviated from the road, ran, and almost threw him off. It turned out that there were six, five, or four graves there.

The Prophet Muhammad asked, "Who knows the inhabitants of these graves?"

A man answered, "I do."

The Prophet asked again, "When did they die?"

He answered, "When they committed shirk (associating partners with Allah)."

The Prophet Muhammad said, "Indeed, this nation is tested in their graves, and if it were not for fear that you would be afraid of burying, I would pray to Allah to make you hear the torment of the grave that I hear."

In Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and Sunan an-Nasa'I, Abu Ayyub al-Ansari said that the Prophet Muhammad went out at night after sunset. Suddenly he heard a voice and said, "A Jew is being tortured in his grave."

Another evidence shows that the Prophet Muhammad heard the voice of a person being punished in the grave, which is a hadith narrated by Bukhari Muslim from Ibn Abbas. It is mentioned that the Prophet Muhammad passed by two graves and then he said, "Both of them are being punished, but not for a major sin."

The Story of the Prophet When Hearing the Voices of Torture in the Grave

Besides the Prophet, some people claim that they can hear or see those who are being tortured in the grave. Among them are trustworthy figures who have no flaws in their religion and honesty.

Ibn Taymiyyah said, "Sometimes, this phenomenon is revealed to people in this era, whether they are awake or asleep. They know and confirm its truthfulness. We can present many things regarding this matter."

In order to refute those who deny the punishment of the grave, Ibn Taymiyyah said:

If it is known that during sleep, the soul of the sleeping person sits, stands, walks, goes, speaks, and does many things internally with its soul, and the body and soul experience pleasure and punishment while the body lies down, the eyes closed, the mouth shut, the limbs still, and sometimes it moves with the strength of internal movement, sometimes it stands, walks, speaks, and screams due to the strength of its internal self.

Then, this is the condition of the deceased in the grave. Their souls sit, request, feel pleasure and pain, and scream, while at the same time they are still connected to their bodies lying in the grave.

Sometimes, this phenomenon becomes stronger to the point that it appears on their bodies. Sometimes they are seen coming out of the grave while still being punished and accompanied by the angels of punishment.

Their bodies move, walk, and come out of the grave. More than one person has heard the voices of those being tortured in the grave. The bodies of the tortured individuals and the bodies of those sitting have also been witnessed.

However, this does not always happen to every corpse. Just like the sitting of a sleeping person, it does not always occur, depending on their condition."
