Dream - Pregnancy conditions certainly cause the body to undergo drastic changes. Some mothers even have to receive special care during pregnancy due to certain health conditions.
A series of health problems arise, such as the risk of very high blood pressure during pregnancy (preeclampsia), pregnancy diabetes (gestational diabetes), and nerve problems. Many do not know that pregnancy also increases a mother's risk of experiencing nerve disorders.
Doctor Ferrdy Pratama Wijaya, a neurology specialist, explains that there are four prerequisite diseases that increase the risk during pregnancy. It is important for pregnant mothers to be cautious. What are they?
1. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)
The following is the translation of the provided 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "This nerve problem occurs due to compression of the median nerve in the wrist area. The symptoms are numbness from the thumb to the little finger of the palm."
"The pain often occurs at night, and it increases during repetitive activities on the wrist," said Dr. Freddy. The complaints of pain or numbness become more pronounced when using gadgets and keyboards. Pregnant women are vulnerable to CTS due to hormonal conditions that cause the body to retain excess fluid. According to Halodoc, this excess fluid can seep through the body tissues and compress the nerves in the wrist. This is what causes CTS in pregnant women."
2. Lower back pain (low back pain)
One of the complaints commonly experienced by pregnant women is lower back pain. This is because the mother experiences a relatively rapid weight gain.
There are also changes in body posture during pregnancy due to hormonal changes. The symptoms that usually appear are pain, especially in the lower back (lumbar), pain in certain positions, and can radiate to the legs.
3. Bell's Palsy
Some mothers are also at risk of experiencing Bell's palsy. According to Dr. Ferddy, this is due to weakness of the facial peripheral nerve (facial nerve).
"The risk increases in the third trimester of pregnancy. The symptoms are sudden weakness on one side of the face, difficulty closing the eye (on one side), increased sensitivity in hearing, drooling from the paralyzed side of the face," said Dr. Freddy.
4. Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST)\/ stroke
Other risks of nerve problems during pregnancy are cerebral venous sinus thrombosis/stroke. This occurs due to an increase in hormones, causing the blood to become thicker (hypercoagulation).
The symptoms can occur suddenly, such as worsening headache that does not improve with pain relievers, seizures, visual disturbances, and decreased consciousness. Source: Instagram @neurodoc.ferrdy
