Dream - Getting children used to fasting is certainly not an easy task. They are very active and love to play with a lot of physical movements. Hunger and thirst can arise at any time.
"In the month of Ramadan like now, for Muslim people it is obligatory to fast. For fathers and mothers who are starting to train their children to fast, they might be a little worried about their physical condition."
Doctor Ade Indrisari, a pediatric specialist, explains that it is best to gradually teach children fasting at the age of 7. Not fasting fully from dawn to dusk.
"We teach gradually, for example by not eating solid food for 4 hours, 6 hours, but still allowed to drink during the initial period, especially when the child is engaged in physical activities and in hot weather, and then we fast from fluids," said Dr. Ade.
It also reminds parents to monitor their children's sleep duration. During Ramadan, nighttime activities are usually busier, such as Tarawih prayers and Quran recitation, then waking up for suhoor. Make sure the children are not unfit due to lack of sleep.
"Do not forget, children should sleep earlier during the month of Ramadan so that their sleep remains sufficient. Give them encouragement by praising them when they succeed," said Dr. Ade.
Doctor Ade also reminds to provide balanced food and drinks with good nutrition during iftar and suhoor. This is to ensure that children do not experience health problems during fasting because their nutrition is well fulfilled.
Monitor the child's condition as well, if there are signs of dehydration such as weakness, the skin does not return when pinched, headaches, it is better to postpone fasting for now. Also try to make the child take a nap so that their body can be more fit and not weak during fasting.
