"Dream - For mothers who are eagerly hoping for pregnancy, many assume that their mental condition will be fine during pregnancy. The reality is not always the same."
They who undergo planned pregnancy will also face stress, upheaval, and uncertainty. Many things change in the body, identity, relationship with their partner, and financial adjustment.
Including anxiety about work and anxiety about career and the future. Therefore, pregnant women often experience mental health disorders. At the same time, the focus during pregnancy is often directed towards what is happening to the body and the baby. Rarely do people discuss the importance of maintaining the mental health of mothers during pregnancy. Mothers who experience mental health disorders often do not know how to overcome them during pregnancy, or where to seek help and support.
"The most common mental health issues during pregnancy are stress and anxiety," said Vanessa Kennedy, PhD, clinical psychologist and director of psychology at Driftwood Recovery."
Stress, according to Kennedy, may be caused by several factors. Pregnant patients often experience varying levels of anxiety regarding their future as parents, especially if they are becoming parents for the first time. "They also worry about their health, the health of their baby, and have concerns about body image or wonder how their lives will change after having a child," said Kennedy.
Mental health is not only related to the conditions often experienced by someone during pregnancy. Pregnant women also experience chemical changes in their bodies.
That can increase emotions, as well as affect energy, sleep, and appetite. Relationships with partners can also be problematic. "Pregnant women also face stress about their relationship with their partner, who also feels their own emotions about pregnancy and the changes that will occur in that relationship," said Kennedy.
Suzanne Bovone, M.D., obstetrics and gynecology specialist at Pediatrix Medical Group, often sees the most common mental health problem in pregnant patients is anxiety. She also frequently encounters obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) during pregnancy.
"The symptoms are like excessive habits (such as repeatedly washing baby clothes) or disturbing thoughts," she said. It is important for all pregnant mothers to undergo screening for perinatal mood disorders, which can occur during pregnancy. If the mother experiences very high anxiety, do not hesitate to consult a doctor and ask for advice."
It could be referred to a psychiatrist or maybe a psychologist later to help stabilize the mental condition. This can also help reduce the risk of postpartum depression and baby blues.
"Many people feel 'crazy' or 'abnormal' when they start experiencing irrational thoughts such as not wanting to hold their baby or being obsessive and worried about hurting their baby, when in fact these symptoms are caused by changes in neurochemistry that occur in the brain and require immediate treatment and support to improve," said Dr. Kennedy.
