Dream - Most parents certainly do not want their children to cry. The sound of crying is synonymous with sadness, pain, and negative things. As much as possible, fathers and mothers will immediately calm the little one or persuade them to stop crying in various ways.
"When a child cries and whines wanting something repeatedly, or fights with their older/younger sibling, there are parents who immediately give in and separate them. Have you ever thought that in such situations, it is actually the mother/father who can't stand hearing the crying?"
Emotions are triggered when hearing a child cry. Instead of comforting, parents get angry and threaten the child to stop crying immediately. This condition only makes the situation uncontrollable. Have you ever experienced this, Mom and Dad? Audrey Susanto, a professional psychologist, provides an explanation through her Instagram @audreytsusanto.
There are many things that make parents unable to stand hearing their children cry, even though crying is a normal thing. "Perhaps what annoys them is the fear of being seen as bad parents. Feeling that the child is crying over trivial matters," said Audrey.
He also revealed that parents who cannot stand hearing their children cry may be because they perceive crying as a forbidden thing because when they were little, they were not allowed to cry. The background of emotions and experiences play a very big role in this.
Audrey reminds parents, if they always feel extremely intolerant when their child cries, it is important to do self-reflection. Always remind yourself that crying is a way for children to communicate, because they are not yet able to communicate their feelings with words.
It is important for fathers and mothers to learn to understand their children slowly and patiently. It could be that the child is crying for a valid reason, but it is the parents' reactive response.
"Try to reflect, ma'am. Because actually, the more we force ourselves to calm down immediately, the more difficult it is for children to feel calm," said Audrey.
Learn to calm yourself when you hear a child crying. Try to empathize. "Approach or hug the child. Validate the child's emotions, don't force the child to calm down, offer help if needed," Audrey said.
With that, the child knows that he feels safe and can express his emotions well to both parents. So, don't get tired of continuing to try to learn, Father and Mother.
