Dream - Playing for children is not just about having fun. Through playing, children learn many things. Starting from physical stimulation, motor skills, cognitive skills to helping their mental development.
Moment of play also becomes a very important thing to train children's creativity. This is what makes many people say that the task of children is to play.
There is an important fact revealed through a study entitled Play Well 2024 Research, which involves more than 61,500 parents and children aged 5 to 12 in 36 countries, including Indonesia. It turns out that when playing, girls tend to be perfectionists and afraid of failure. From the research, it is known that the confidence and creativity of girls are influenced by societal pressure that demands them to always be perfect. This causes their creative confidence to decrease.
Confidence in creativity is the courage to try and embrace failure while developing new ideas, which can influence children through adulthood.
Study reveals that even five-year-old girls have experienced a decline in creative self-confidence due to pressure to achieve perfection and the influence of everyday language. At this young age, three-quarters (76%) feel confident in their creativity, but this decreases as they grow older. Two-thirds of all girls often feel worried about sharing their ideas.
At this young age, three quarters (76%) feel confident in their creativity, but this decreases with age. Two thirds of all girls often feel worried to share their ideas. This is exacerbated by the burden of perfectionism and anxiety about making mistakes (72%). Girls aged 5 to 12 say that the language they hear makes them feel as if they are not allowed to experiment and make mistakes (71%), or reinforces the need for perfection (73%).
Then 80 percent said that they would be more willing to try new things if mistakes were praised more as opportunities to learn, and girls said that they felt encouraged by growth-mindset praises like 'imaginative', 'brave', and 'inspiring'.
To help families cultivate creative self-confidence through the power of play and everyday language, Harvard-trained parenting researcher and bestselling author Jennifer B. Wallace collaborates with The LEGO Group to launch the parenting guide "10 Steps to Fostering Creative Confidence".
In this guide, It provides tips on how to cultivate creative self-confidence, such as becoming more aware of gender stereotypes when talking about creative ideas.
For example, using words like "genius", "smart", and "brave" to describe boys' work, or "beautiful", "cute", and "pretty" to describe girls' work. Instead, Wallace suggests using a mixture of these words and encouraging children to ask questions and challenge these social stereotypes. Additionally, you can always stimulate children by playing with bricks like Lego to make them more courageous in exploring.
Specifically in Indonesia and out of 643 surveyed children, research reveals that 96 percent said that playing with LEGO helps girls overcome the fear of making mistakes.
As many as 97 percent feel more confident in their creative skills, and 96 percent feel that this helps them learn that progress is more important than perfection. "Through the process of building and reassembling LEGO bricks, it forms the foundation for creative confidence, courage, and self-belief. This is key, because when girls have the space and freedom to fully express themselves, they become unstoppable," said Alero Akuya, VP Global Brand at The LEGO Group in a press release received by Dream.
