Dream - Parents, students, and teachers in Indonesia are already familiar with the full day school system. This system makes students spend around 8 to 9 hours at school with various activities. Not only learning, but also extracurricular activities.

Who would have thought that in England there is a school that implements a school duration of up to 12 hours, namely at All Saints Catholic College. The school, located in West London, is one of the schools that has a lot of enthusiasts.

The implementation of a 12-hour school has just been tested by the school principal, Andrew O'Neil. According to him, this is indeed quite radical and undoubtedly triggers pros and cons.

"We do this to rebuild a sense of ownership in children. Children's behavior tends to be apathetic after the pandemic," said O'Neil. Being in school for 12 hours doesn't mean children are constantly learning. According to O'Neil, students will actually play and interact a lot without using gadgets. This school runs from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm."

"The thing they like the most is togetherness. Gathering the children, eating or playing, and they just chat, tease each other, do all the things that children like — we just arrange it for them," said O'Neil."

"Breakfast and Dinner at School"

Students are not forced to undergo a 12-hour school program. Those who participate will have breakfast and dinner at school. The activity carried out after school hours is a one-hour deepening of the material.

Then followed by extracurricular activities. Such as pickleball, art class, or cooking before having dinner with their friends. This program charges a fixed fee of £10 ($13) or Rp210 per week per child.

"Having breakfast and dinner with classmates is "calming" for students. It is also an opportunity to get additional guidance from teachers in doing homework and make them feel less stressed," said O'Neil.

"Helping 'Anxious Generations'"

The experiment conducted by All Saints with 12-hour school emerged amidst growing concerns about the impact of smartphones and social media on teenagers. The best-selling book "The Anxious Generation" by Jonathan Haidt adds fuel to the fire by stating that the widespread use of smartphones is associated with an increase in mental illnesses.

Zach Rausch, an associate research scientist at NYU-Stern Business School and the lead researcher for Haidt, referred to the All Saints experiment as a "phenomenal" example of "collective action problem."

"In many ways, this experiment brings back a normal childhood. It shows that these children do not always want to use their phones in their bedrooms, but if that's what happens and everyone does it," said Rausch. Source: Business Insider"
