Dream - Three cities in Indonesia have made it onto the list of cities in the world with unusually hot temperatures worsened by climate change. This finding was obtained from the report "People Exposed to Climate Change: March-May 2024" issued by Climate Central.
"The three major cities in Indonesia included in the list are Makassar, Semarang, and Jakarta. Compared to the two cities in Java, Makassar ranks first in the list of cities in the world with unusually hot temperatures."
The cause of Makassar becoming the hottest city in Indonesia according to the report is climate change. Makassar is recorded to have experienced 92 days of climate shift index (CSI) level 3 or higher and temperature anomalies reaching 1.2°C.
Following Semarang, which is on the same list as Makassar in 11th position with a record of 88 days at CSI level 3 or higher and a temperature anomaly of 1.4°C. Meanwhile, Jakarta is in 4th position with a record of 77 days at CSI level 3 or higher and a temperature anomaly of 0.9°C. Jakarta is only surpassed by Lagos (Nigeria) with 88 days at CSI 3 or higher, Kinshasa (Congo) with 79 days at CSI 3 or higher, and Mexico City (Mexico) with 78 days at CSI 3 or higher.
To be known, the CSI method used by Climate Central aims to measure the local influence of climate change on daily temperatures worldwide. CSI level 1 means that climate change can be detected, technically, an increase in temperature at least 1.5 times more likely to occur, while CSI level 2 means an increase in temperature at least 2 times more likely to occur, and so on.
Climate Central in its report discusses global temperature attribution from March to May 2024. The report explains the impact of climate change in nearly 500 cities and over 150 countries, including the United States (US) and Puerto Rico.
In those three months, a new global temperature record was recorded, causing billions of people to suffer from heat triggered by carbon emissions.
In March, April, and May 2024, each broke records for global monthly temperatures. During this period, the impact of climate change caused by human activities, especially due to the burning of fossil fuels, was evident worldwide, particularly in the form of extreme heat. In 58 countries, on average, people experienced strong impacts of climate change at least two out of every three days during the past three months.
These countries are included in Central, Eastern, and Western Africa, Southeast Asia, Central and Caribbean America, South America, as well as small island countries in Polynesia and Melanesia. Due to climate change, approximately 1 in 4 people in the world experience a temperature increase of at least three times a day from March 1 to May 31, 2024. The peak is on April 6, 2024. At that time, 2.7 billion people or 1 in 3 people in the world feel an unusual temperature with a strong influence from climate change.
Around 44 percent of the population in Africa and one in three people in South America experience extreme heat due to climate change for at least 60 days. In Asia, on average, people in nine countries, including eight in Southeast Asia such as Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, feel the strong impact of climate change for at least two out of three days in one season.
