"1. Salamander Babies Look Like Frog Babies!"
"When they are first born, salamander babies are called efts. This is their larval stage. When salamanders are at the eft stage, they live in water before moving to land. They also do not have legs at this stage; because of this fact, salamander babies are very similar to tadpoles."
"2. Some Salamanders Lay Hundreds. Others None!"
There are two main types of salamanders that give birth to live young, namely the fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) and the alpine salamander (Salamandra atra).
In both of these species, fertilization of the eggs occurs internally. The eggs develop inside the female's body, and then, when the eggs hatch, she releases her live young directly into the water. As a result, although they are not mammals, they do not lay eggs. On the other side of the spectrum, other species of salamanders may lay hundreds of eggs. Although most salamanders tend to lay between 200 and 400 eggs, some salamanders may lay as many as 450 eggs!
"3. Certain species of salamander can grow up to nearly 6 feet in length."
The most common salamander in North America is the tiger salamander. This small specimen typically grows to about 4 to 6 inches. The largest salamander is the Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus).
"Besides being the largest salamander, they are also among the heaviest amphibians in the world. Adult species can grow up to 5.9 feet long and weigh 130 pounds. Their weight is almost equivalent to that of a newborn giraffe."
"4. There are more than 600 different species of salamanders."
There are ten families of salamanders that are still alive, all united under the order Urodela. Among these ten families, there are more than 600 known species of salamanders.
"Of all the salamander species in the world, about one third are found in North America. The eastern part of North America, particularly the Appalachian Mountains, has the highest level of salamander diversity. Globally, the Northern Hemisphere has the most species."
"5. The salamander can breathe through its skin."
Skin respiration, or respiration through the skin, commonly occurs in many types of amphibians. This includes frogs and salamanders. However, in many species, skin respiration is often combined with gills or lungs. This is because it is difficult to gather enough oxygen through the skin to support biological functions.
Although, there are salamander species that rely solely on respiration through their skin. Take for example lungless salamanders. This species does not have lungs or gills. As a result, all oxygen absorption occurs through their skin. However, because of this, salamanders become more sensitive to environmental pollutants.
6. Some salamanders are capable of regenerating injured body parts.
According to research, it is highly likely that all salamanders have the ability to regenerate body parts after injury. However, the specific regeneration capabilities may vary. This means that they may be able to recover everything, from the tail, limbs, to injured organs.

7. Salamanders have once roamed alongside dinosaurs.
When we think of the dinosaur era, we often imagine reptiles like crocodiles or alligators dominating. Other species, including many salamanders, also spent a considerable amount of time on this earth. One species of salamander, for example, was found to be 168 million years old.
