Dream - Who doesn't like the precious metal called gold. In its history, gold has been the most valuable precious metal in the world. Everyone is competing to own it, no matter how. It is not uncommon to even cause bloodshed. To obtain this gold, we have to mine it by digging deep tunnels into the ground. Although there are also those who mine gold near the river. But did you know, Sahabat Dream, that all this time we have actually been standing on a very vast gold mine?
There is so much gold on Earth that if it were all lifted, it could cover every part of this planet's land up to a depth of 50 centimeters. Unfortunately, even though the gold content is abundant on Earth, it is not easy to obtain. The problem is that almost all of this gold has sunk into the Earth's core, making it difficult to reach even with advanced technology.
Most of the Earth's core is composed of various types of minerals, including the precious metal gold. However, the most dominant ones are iron and nickel.
"Unfortunately, the precious metals contained in the minerals that make up the Earth's core cannot be detected unless their density is altered."
Until the existence of precious metal gold in the Earth's core remains a mystery to scientists, its exact quantity is also unknown. Until 2006, a group of scientists led by Professor Bernard Wood from Macquarie University discovered a method to determine the amount of gold contained in the Earth's core. Wood was able to determine the amount of gold in the Earth's core by examining meteorites from the remains of asteroids. These celestial bodies have similarities in properties and elements with the Earth.
According to Wood, some asteroids have a composition similar to Earth because they go through the same formation process.
"Through the computer model he created, Wood then calculates the gold content within the Earth's core with meteorites as his inspiration. Wood explains that elements that are insoluble in molten iron will not enter the Earth's core. As a result, there are elements that are much more abundant in the Earth's crust than those that settle in the Earth's core."
"Because the composition of elements in the Earth's core and in the meteorite studied by Wood turned out to be the same, he was able to calculate the amount of elements dissolved by iron."
The result is, Wood can estimate the gold content on Earth. It turns out, 99% of the gold on Earth is buried within the Earth's core. 'What we can conclude is that 99 percent of the Earth's gold content is in its core,' said Wood.
The goal is to search for rare elements in outer space. For now, this method is much cheaper than drilling into the Earth's core. However, there are other problems if the gold content in the Earth's core is successfully brought to the surface. If all the gold in the Earth's core is successfully extracted, then the world economy will collapse because the price of goods will plummet. Source: IFL Science.
