Many people still cannot be grateful for the blessings that Allah SWT has given. Those who have more wealth, sometimes find it difficult to use their wealth for the sake of Allah. Even though they are willing to spend a lot of their wealth on worldly matters that are not beneficial. They often indulge themselves but forget their obligation to pay zakat. However, zakat is one of the pillars of Islam.

In a hadith, it is explained that if someone is given wealth by Allah but does not pay zakat, then in the afterlife, all of their possessions will turn into a large snake and be hung around their neck. We seek refuge in Allah from that. The statement is as mentioned in the hadith below.

"Do not be stingy and greedy."

From Abu Hurairah, he said that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: "Whoever is given wealth by Allah but does not pay its zakat, then that wealth will transform into a snake that has two black spots above its eyes. Then the snake will be put around his neck on the Day of Judgment and will bite his cheeks. The snake will say, 'I am your wealth and your treasure trove.' Then the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) recited, 'And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them.' (HR. Al Bukhari, no 1403)"

The hadith explains how the wealth given by Allah SWT to us should be utilized to the best of our abilities for positive purposes, including charity and zakat. Giving zakat, especially zakat fitrah, is a way to purify wealth. If wealth is not purified through zakat, it will bring about disaster on the Day of Judgment.

Interpretation of Verses

According to the interpretation of Tafsir Tahlili originating from the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, from the verse it can be understood that those who are given wealth and blessings by Allah but become stingy, refraining from giving Allah's rights such as zakat and other obligations, then such behavior is highly reprehensible. The wealth that they hoard will be hung around their necks on the Day of Judgment. Therefore, do not be stingy, greedy, in giving zakat, because part of our wealth belongs to others.
