Is Salam after Prayer a Bid'ah? This is the Opinion of the Scholars that Muslims Should Know

Dream - Shaking hands after congregational prayer has become a tradition among Muslims in Indonesia. Whether it is during congregational prayer at home or in the mosque. After completing the prayer, each worshipper will shake hands with other worshippers who are on the right, left, front, and back. However, there are also Muslims who do not do it. Some even consider it as bid'ah (an innovation in religion). Is that true? To find out the explanation about the ruling of shaking hands after congregational prayer, here is the summary as compiled by Dream through various sources.

Shaking hands between Muslims is a prescribed act.

Shaking hands between Muslims is a prescribed act.

Quoted from tebuireng.online, actually shaking hands between Muslims when meeting is a recommended thing.

Not only in the mosque or after prayer, but it can be anywhere and anytime. So it is not bound by time, place, and circumstances. In a hadith, it is explained about the congregation who competed to shake hands with Prophet Muhammad after the dawn prayer: "Narrated from the companion Yazid bin Aswad that he prayed dawn prayer with Rasulallah, then after the prayer, the congregation competed to shake hands with the Prophet, then they wiped it on their own faces, and I also shook hands with the Prophet and wiped it on my face." (HR. Bukhari, hadith number 3360)

Shaking hands is one of the habits of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) when meeting with his companions. This is explained by the companions Anas bin Malik and asy-Sya'bi: "The companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to shake hands when they met each other, and if they came from a journey, they would hug each other." Shaking hands, which has now become part of the customs of society, especially among Muslims, is not as simple as it seems. Behind it, there are virtues that can be obtained, namely the forgiveness of their sins by Allah SWT.

This is explained in the following hadith: "There is no two Muslims who meet and shake hands with each other except that their sins are forgiven by Allah before they part ways." (HR. Abu Dawud)

Is Shaking Hands after Prayer Bid'ah? This is the Opinion of Important Scholars that Muslims Should Know

"Is shaking hands after prayer considered Bid'ah?"

Shaking hands after congregational prayer has become a long-standing tradition among Muslims. However, not all Muslims practice it because some consider it to be an innovation (bid'ah). Among the scholars themselves, there are differing opinions regarding shaking hands after congregational prayer. Here are some of their opinions as quoted from islam.nu.or.id:

Is Shaking Hands after Prayer Bid'ah? This is the Opinion of Important Scholars that Muslims Should Know

"First Opinion"

Some Hanafi scholars, namely Sheikh Ath-Thahawi and An-Nablisi, say that shaking hands after prayer is recommended. Sheikh Ath-Thahawi said, "And it is also recommended to shake hands. It is recommended after any prayer." (Ahmad bin Muhammad Ath-Thahawi, Hasyiyatut Thahawi Ala Maraqil Falah, volume 1, p. 345)

"Second Opinion"

Some scholars from the Hanafi school of thought say that shaking hands after prayer is makruh (disliked). This is because there is concern about the assumption that shaking hands after prayer is recommended (sunah) because it is done continuously. Nevertheless, among the scholars who dislike shaking hands after prayer, they say that if a Muslim extends their hand to shake hands, it is better not to refuse.

"Third Opinion"

scholars of the Shafi'i school of thought state that the ruling for shaking hands after prayer is permissible. It is also explained in the book Al-Adzkar An-Nawawiyyah by Imam Nawawi: "As for the customary practice of the community, such as shaking hands after the Fajr prayer and the Asr prayer, there is no basis for it in Islamic law, according to this way, but it is permissible to do so." (Yahya bin Syaraf Annawawi, Al-Adzkar An-Nawawiyyah, volume 1, page 337)

So, through the three opinions above, there are differences among scholars regarding the law of shaking hands after congregational prayer. However, according to credible scholars, shaking hands after prayer is a religious practice and not an innovation. It is even explained on tebuireng.online that shaking hands contains values of goodness that can enhance the feeling of love and the closeness of brotherhood among fellow Muslims.
